Today we honour the founder of the Society of Jesus, commonly known as the Jesuits, the Spaniard, St Ignatius of Loyola.

As a young man, he was a page in the royal court and later became a soldier but was seriously injured in the leg. During an extended recuperation, he found the only books available for him to read were about the life of Christ and His saints.

This led to his conversion to being a disciple of Christ, going on pilgrimage to the Holy Land where he spent ten months in a cave praying.

When he returned to Spain, St Ignatius went to university and alongside his friends, he established a new religious order which went on to become the biggest and most influential order of priests in the world. St Ignatius of Loyola, pray for us!

Today we honour Saints Martha, Mary and Lazarus, siblings who lived together in a house in Bethany, on the road between Jerusalem and Jericho.

Jesus indeed made Bethany His base as He went in and out of Jerusalem in Holy Week.

Martha was very much in charge of her household. On one famous occasion, Martha’s younger sister Mary sat at the Lord’s feet listening to his teaching, while Martha focused on doing all the work at the party and Lazarus did little.

Though Martha receives a gentle rebuke from Christ for her anxiety and squabbling, her jealousy and workaholism, Jesus has a broader lesson here for us all. Like St Martha, we too need faith and friendship in our lives, both contemplation and action, our feet on the ground and our eyes heavenward. Saints Martha, Mary and Lazarus, pray for us!
