At our recent Your Year to Volunteer: Disaster and Economic Resilience event, ABV CEO Liz Mackinlay shared a powerful reminder — it’s the skills, insight and commitment of volunteers that help communities not just recover, but thrive.

From disaster preparedness to economic resilience and social cohesion, skilled volunteers play a critical role in shaping solutions that are community-led and built to last.

Thank you to our volunteers who continue to bring curiosity, expertise and generosity to this work. Together, you are helping create meaningful, lasting impact across regional Australia.

A big thank you to everyone who joined the Resilient CARE Community Action Workshop in Agnes Water recently.

It was encouraging to see community members, emergency services, health professionals, local businesses and organisations come together with a shared focus on practical action for a safer, more connected community during times of disaster.

From local projects already underway to identifying priority actions and next steps, the conversations showed the strength of local leadership and what’s possible when a community works together.

From 20 April to 15 May, our latest program cycle was delivered in Sigatoka, Fiji with ABV volunteers Lesley and John, bringing together 27 small business participants from across the local community.

The cohort reflected the diversity of Sigatoka’s MSME sector, with participants spanning tourism and hospitality, retail and trade, agriculture, handicrafts, and forestry. From tour operators and restaurants to farming, timber, and community-based retail businesses, the program showcased the breadth of local enterprise driving the region’s economy.

Participants have now moved into the remote coaching and mentoring phase, where they will continue to receive tailored support from volunteers as they implement their business goals and action plans in the months ahead.

We’re hiring: Program Coordinator, Resilient Care Program — Bundaberg and Agnes Water

ABV is seeking a skilled, community‑focused Program Coordinator to support the delivery of the Resilient Care Program across Bundaberg and Agnes Water.

Working alongside Country to Coast Queensland teams, you’ll help strengthen local capability, support community‑led action and connect organisations with skilled business volunteers who can amplify their impact.

In this role you will:

- Connect people, ideas and opportunities to strengthen collaboration
- Contribute to shared learning with ABV, CCQ and The Good Shift

Use your grant writing skills to help communities stay connected, safe and resilient.

Across regional and remote Australia, small community organisations are supporting wellbeing, strengthening connection, and preparing for times of crisis. Right now, they need skilled volunteers to help unlock funding so they can keep going.

At Australian Business Volunteers (ABV), we have three immediate grant writing opportunities where your expertise can make a tangible difference:

👉 Ridgelands, QLD – Community Hall Committee
Help a rural community upgrade their local hall so it can function as a safe place of refuge during floods and disasters. When roads are cut off, this hall becomes a lifeline—for connection, care, and recovery.

👉 Orbost, VIC – Neighbourhood House
Support a vital community hub navigating change while continuing to deliver programs for older people, vulnerable residents, and those at risk of isolation.

👉 East Gippsland, VIC – First Nations Organisation (Moogji Aboriginal Council)
Work alongside a community-led organisation delivering culturally grounded programs that strengthen healing, identity, and social and emotional wellbeing.

These are flexible, online volunteer roles where you’ll:

- Identify and develop funding opportunities
- Turn real community needs into compelling grant narratives
- Build lasting capability so organisations can secure funding into the future

We’re also recruiting for additional roles soon, so if this speaks to you, we encourage you to get in touch.
