Victor Chang Foundation Giving people with heart disease the greatest gift – the opportunity to live.

Our charity was established by pioneering heart surgeon Victor Chang in 1984, and we continue his legacy by providing grants for heart education and innovation. Dr Chang and his team performed the first successful heart transplant in Australia in 1984, and he made a significant contribution to international relations between Australia and China. Over the next five years the Victor Chang Foundation is aiming to raise $2 million from donations to work in Australia and beyond. The Victor Chang Foundation awards grants for: 1) education – so doctors and surgeons can perform life-saving surgery, such as heart and lung transplants, and 2) to innovate and create the next generation of procedures and devices to help save lives. At just 14 years old, Fiona Coote became the youngest heart transplant recipient in Australia at the time, receiving a donor heart in 1984 under the care of Dr Victor Chang and his team at St Vincent’s Hospital. ❤️

Her story is closely intertwined with Dr Chang’s pioneering cardiac surgery. A connection that still continues.

Dr Victor Chang was one of the pioneers of heart transplantation surgery in Asia. ❤️

Through his work at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney, Dr Chang and his team helped advance heart transplant surgery and give new hope to patients with severe heart disease.

But his impact extended beyond the operating theatre. Dr Chang strongly believed in sharing knowledge and developing the skills of other cardiac surgeons — a commitment that continues through the Victor Chang Foundation today.

More than four decades ago, Fiona Coote’s life became closely connected with Dr Chang and his pioneering work in cardiac surgery. ❤️

In 1984, Fiona received one of Australia’s first heart transplants, performed by Dr Chang and his team at St Vincent’s Hospital.

Today, Fiona remains an important part of the Victor Chang Foundation story as a Patron and long-standing supporter of our work.

Her connection to Dr Chang is a powerful reminder of the legacy he left behind — one the Foundation continues through education and innovation in cardiac surgery, helping support and train the next generation of heart surgeons.

Held each year on 29 September, World Heart Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of heart health and the impact cardiovascular disease has on people and families around the world.

For the Victor Chang Foundation, it is also a day that speaks closely to the vision of Dr Chang.

Dr Chang founded the Foundation in 1984 with a vision to save lives through sharing knowledge and skills, alongside innovation in cardiac surgery. Today, we continue that mission by supporting the training of cardiac surgeons, particularly in heart and lung transplantation, and innovation in cardiac surgery.

This World Heart Day, we honour Dr Chang’s legacy and the people, including you, whose support, help us continue his work.

China remembers Dr Chang's legacy ❤️

Ahead of the Mid-Autumn Festival, the Chang family were honoured to be invited to meet Chinese Ambassador to Australia, Liu Jinsong, and the Consul-General in Sydney, Wang Yu, to talk about the work of the Victor Chang Foundation.

It was heart-warming to hear that people across China remember Dr Chang and still hold him in such high regard, all these years on.

In 1984, Dr Chang started the Victor Chang Foundation to fund the training of heart surgeons; building a bridge of friendship between Australia and Asia. The Ambassador reinforced the importance of keeping this connection between Australian and Chinese communities and continuing the work of the VCF.

Dr Chang’s legacy has not faded.
