Giving people with heart disease the greatest gift – the opportunity to live.

Our charity was established by pioneering heart surgeon Victor Chang in 1984, and we continue his legacy by providing grants for heart education and innovation. Dr Chang and his team performed the first successful heart transplant in Australia in 1984, and he made a significant contribution to international relations between Australia and China. Over the next five years the Victor Chang Foundation

is aiming to raise $2 million from donations to work in Australia and beyond. The Victor Chang Foundation awards grants for: 1) education – so doctors and surgeons can perform life-saving surgery, such as heart and lung transplants, and 2) to innovate and create the next generation of procedures and devices to help save lives. Meet Dr Deng, The VCF’s 2025/26 Cardiac Surgical Fellow. Your donations made it possible for the VCF to fund his Victor Chang Foundation Cardiac Fellowship.

Since completing his training at St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney, Dr Deng has returned home as an attending cardiac surgeon at Fuwai Hospital in Beijing — China's national centre for cardiovascular disease. He's now leading operations as the primary surgeon, with 20 cases performed.

Did you know the Victor Chang Foundation was founded by Dr Victor Chang in 1984? ❤️

Dr Chang had a vision to save lives through sharing knowledge and skills, as well as innovation in cardiac surgery.

More than four decades later, the Foundation continues that vision by supporting the education and training of heart surgeons, particularly in heart and lung transplantation, alongside innovation in areas including heart transplantation, artificial hearts and artificial valves.

Doctor Chang’s story began in Shanghai in 1936. ❤️

After moving to Australia as a teenager, Doctor Chang went on to dedicate his life to cardiac surgery, sharing knowledge and skills that would help save lives. Alongside his St Vincent’s team, his pioneering work helped advance heart transplantation and cardiac surgery in Australia.

In 1984, Doctor Chang founded the Victor Chang Foundation with a vision to save lives through sharing knowledge and skills, as well as innovation in cardiac surgery. Today, the Foundation continues that vision through education and innovation.

Ahead of National Doctors’ Day in China on 19 August, we honour Doctor Chang’s Chinese heritage and celebrate the doctors who dedicate their lives to caring for others.

This World Organ Donation Day, we honour the organ donors and families whose selfless decisions have given thousands of people a second chance at life.

This Day reminds us that every transplant begins with an extraordinary act of generosity. Dr Chang understood that organ donation is the greatest gift.

His vision was not only to save lives through heart transplantation, but to ensure future generations of heart surgeons had the knowledge and skills to continue that life-saving work.

Today, the VCF continues that vision through training heart surgeons cardiac surgical techniques such as heart transplantation - this can only be possible through organ donation.

The Victor Chang Team crossed the finish line at this year’s City2Surf last weekend, running to fund a heart surgeon. ❤️

Thanks to your generosity, our City2Surf fundraising teams have already raised over $17,000 for the Victor Chang Foundation.

Our aim is to review applications for the next VCF Cardiac Surgical Fellow to come to Australia to train in 2027. Reaching our $50,000 goal is what will help make that possible.

We’re a third of the way there, and the good news is, it’s not too late to donate. With fundraising remaining open until 26 September, our goal is genuinely within reach.
