Musica Viva Australia

Musica Viva Australia Musica Viva Australia presents inspiring chamber music, provides music education in schools and champions emerging talent across Australia.

Our story began on 8 December 1945 with a concert of Beethoven and Mozart at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. In the 75 years since, the people of Musica Viva – our artists and collaborators, audiences and donors, volunteers and committees, board and staff – have created a fertile landscape of music right across Australia. We started as a chamber music organisation focused on just one ensemble,

but we soon expanded beyond Sydney to become one of the world’s largest presenters of chamber music. We showcase the finest local and international chamber music artists to audiences all around Australia, in our most prestigious concert halls and our smallest school halls, in capital cities, regional centres and remote communities. We are proud of our history of uncovering new talent, developing the early careers of some of our best musicians and promoting our most acclaimed ensembles here and overseas. We continue to nurture the careers of young musicians, and in 2020, Strike A Chord, our inaugural National Chamber Music Championship, will give high school students from all over Australia the opportunity to experience the joy of making chamber music. Through the support of many donors, we have commissioned hundreds of new compositions from Australian composers, and we play a leading role in supporting female composers through our Hildegard Project. We have been bringing live music to schools for nearly 40 years, and whole generations of Australian children have experienced our programs. We continue to delight and inspire close to 300,000 students each year, and we support their teachers with vital training and professional development.

Opening night is here, and Musica Viva Australia is thrilled to welcome back familiar collaborators to the stage.

Lloyd Van’t Hoff’s connection with Musica Viva Australia spans multiple projects — including The Air I Breathe (MVAIS), Arcadia Winds as a FutureMaker, his role on the SAC Jury in 2025, and recent masterclasses.

The Doric String Quartet also share a long history with Musica Viva Australia, having competed at MICMC in 2007 and returning for a national tour in 2019.

A full-circle moment in different ways, as these artistic relationships continue to evolve across seasons.

Chookas to the performers tonight.

This June, Musica Viva Australia presents Alchymia by Thomas Adès, performed by the Doric String Quartet and clarinettist Lloyd Van't Hoff. The work takes its name from the half-scientific, half-magical discipline of alchemy.

Adès draws on fragments of the Elizabethan world, with echoes of John Dowland, William Byrd, and the song traditions that surrounded Shakespeare. Rather than quoting directly, he fragments and reimagines this material in shifting, modern textures.

Across the work, familiar gestures surface and dissolve, while clarinet and strings intertwine so closely they feel like a single evolving sound. Adès transforms musical history into something volatile, vivid, and new.

Thomas Adès is widely regarded as one of the most distinctive British composers of his generation. He has described composing as “completely surreal”, like “sculpting in air,” where sound is continually reshaped into new forms.

Meet the artists before the Doric String Quartet and Lloyd Van't Hoff come together for Beethoven, Britten and Adès.

1. Cellist John Myerscough has been in the Doric String Quartet since he was 15 years old - that’s over 25 years in the same group!
2. John plays a 1587 Brothers Amati cello. It was built when Shakespeare was still writing his earliest plays.
3. Violist Emma Wernig was "offended" when she was first told to switch from violin to viola at age 12. She thought the viola was only for people who couldn’t make it on violin - she’s since changed her mind!
4. First violinist Maia Cabeza has a truly international background: born in Japan with Argentinean heritage, she holds Canadian-American citizenship and currently lives in Berlin.
5. Clarinettist Lloyd Van’t Hoff grew up in rural Charters Towers. His first instrument was the sax because it was the only thing available in town. He didn't start clarinet until he was 12.

Touring nationally with Musica Viva Australia. 14–28 June.
