4 August 1995. A day that changed hundreds of thousands of Serbian lives forever.

Today, we remember the victims of Operation Storm (Oluja), a tragedy that resulted in one of the largest forced displacements of people in Europe since the Second World War.

In just a matter of days, more than 220,000 Serbian civilians were forced to flee their homes in the Krajina region. Families abandoned everything they had built over generations. Many never returned.

To this day, 1,852 Serbs remain listed as killed or missing, including around 1,200 civilians. Thousands of homes, churches, schools, cemeteries and cultural sites were destroyed, leaving wounds that remain open decades later.

For the Serbian people, this is not a day of politics.

It is not a day of celebration.
It is a day of remembrance.

A day to honour the innocent lives lost, the families who were driven from their homes, and those who continue to carry the pain of exile and unanswered questions.

What makes this day even more heartbreaking is that, while Serbian families gather to light candles for their dead, many still choose to use words like "Oluja" and "Traktori" to deliberately reopen old wounds.

These are not harmless words. They are used to remind survivors of the day they lost their homes, their loved ones, and the lives they once knew. For those who lived through it, every such comment is another knife twisted into wounds that have never truly healed.

There is no honour in celebrating the suffering of innocent civilians. There is no pride in rejoicing over refugees, grieving families, or the dead.

As veterans, descendants, and custodians of our history, we have a duty to remember. Not to spread hatred, but to ensure that the stories of those who suffered are never erased, forgotten, or dismissed.

Memory is not hatred. Remembrance is not revenge. It is our responsibility.
