Many thanks for the unanimous support from Campbelltown Councillors to a motion put by Deputy Mayor Cr Jayden Rivera - Campbelltown City Council, The Greens, seconded by Councillor Cameron McEwan - Campbelltown City Council last week to write to the NSW Government advocating for an underpass at Mallaty Creek, inline with the Campbelltown Koala Plan of Management.

Another Koala killed on the roads of Greater Sydney this weekend, this time on the Hume Highway at Pheasants Nest, in another area we have mapped as a corridor in need of protection and restoration.

We are urging the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure and NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water to urgently adopt our corridor mapping to protect vital links for wildlife as development pressures grow.

🚨 ROSALIND PARK PLANNING PROPOSAL: MENANGLE CREEK KOALA CORRIDOR DOES NOT MEET THE MINIMUM WIDTH

📣 PUBLIC SUBMISSIONS CLOSE 5PM THURS 21 AUG

The proposed Rosalind Park development in Campbelltown Council is claiming a compliant Menangle Creek Koala Corridor, but the corridor is being artificially inflated and does not demonstrate the required minimum width.

📏 Minimum 250m required: The Chief Scientist requires a minimum corridor width of 250m, with a minimum average of 390m. Rosalind Park does not demonstrate this standard across the functional corridor with many sections falling below 250m.

📐 “Matchstick” methodology: Transects can inflate the claimed width by measuring selected sections rather than the narrowest parts of an irregular corridor. An average cannot hide sections below 250m or use wider measurements to artificially inflate an average minimum width.

🌱 Unvegetated land at Gilead Stage 2 counted as corridor: Unvegetated and unsecured land associated with Gilead Stage 2 is being incorporated into the corridor calculation, despite Gilead Stage 2 not proceeding.

⛰️ Menangle Creek confluence barrier: The steep incline along the Menangle Creek confluence prevents koalas moving across the creek. These sections do not represent a functional corridor that can be measured as a whole. Minimum widths must be met on both sides of the creek around the confluence as per Chief Scientist advice.

⚠️ Don't weaken the Condition 22A precedent
Campbelltown Council's Figtree Hill Condition 22A protected a 250m corridor boundary along Menangle Creek, supporting an approximately 400m average corridor. Rosalind Park should not be allowed to establish a weaker standard.

👉 Please make a submission opposing the Rosalind Park development and call for the Menangle Creek Koala Corridor to be independently reassessed.

New polling out by the The Australia Institute shows over 4 in 5 people think the government has an obligation to protect koala habitat (82%). That includes 3 in 4 Liberal voters (77%) and One Nation voters (73%). This is consistent with our own previous polling.

A reminder that Transport for NSW and NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure are being selective about what the Chief Scientist says about Mallaty Creek. It’s in writing that the Chief Scientist said Mallaty Creek was “suitable for koala movement and should be protected with exclusion fencing and additional buffer zones” (Campbelltown Koala Advice Report 1, 2020). It’s also identified as an important corridor in the Campbelltown Koala Plan of Management.

Mallaty Creek is the most direct Koala corridor from the Georges River to the Nepean River in the Sydney Basin, yet the Government plans to terminate it. A number of false and misleading reasons have been given by Government officials to justify this.

🐨 Koala breeding season is here - please drive with care.

🌗 Koalas are more active during breeding season, especially around dawn and dusk, but they can be on the move at any time of day.

🚗 If you're driving near bushland, reserves or residential areas, please slow down and stay alert, especially after dark when koalas can be difficult to see. Keep an eye out for our yellow koala warning signs and reduce your speed in these areas.

Even if a koala has sadly died, please still report it. They can provide valuable information, helping researchers better understand koala health, disease and threats to the local population.

Many thanks to Wollondilly Shire Council councillors for unanimously voting last week to protect all Strategic Conservation Area zoned land and to implement a koala corridor of chief scientist widths to the Walkers Industrial Park planning proposal. And thanks to all our followers that engaged with this very important process! The next step is sending to State Government for a gateway determination.

Some good news on the Moreton Road Industrial Park proposal: After we made representations to Wollondilly Council and spoke at the Wollondilly Local Planning Panel, raising our concerns with a proposal to remove 44ha of Strategic Conservation Area AND a to reduce the size of the Primary Nepean River Koala Corridor, we are thrilled both the Council and the Planning Panel have recommended to reject these audacious amendments by Walker Corporation!

Instead, council have recommended councillors vote at the next Wollondilly Council meeting to:

- Retain the existing SCA mapping under the Biodiversity and Conservation SEPP;
- Amend the proposed zoning of land currently identified as SCA to C2 Environmental Conservation with final zoning boundaries and application informed by expert advice on koala corridors from the Office of the NSW Chief Scientist and Engineer;

While we know the local community hold many other reservations about this project, we are very thankful this important area has been recognised by Council. Now we just need the Councillors to agree!
