A Tribute from ACAS to Ivan Simon PSM
The Aboriginal Children's Advancement Society pays heartfelt tribute to Ivan Simon PSM, a man whose leadership, generosity, and unwavering commitment shaped our organisation for more than three decades.
Ivan served on the ACAS Board for 33 years, including many years as our knowledgeable and deeply respected President. He carried an extraordinary understanding of our history and purpose, always reminding us that our work must honour the vision of the Elders who founded ACAS in 1963. His guidance was steady, principled, and grounded in a lifelong dedication to Aboriginal children and families.
Ivan's service extended far beyond the boardroom. As a houseparent at Biala for Aboriginal Hostels Limited, he created a safe and culturally grounded home for young people who were seeking educational stability in a caring environment. He later initiated Natisha, shaping it with vision, cultural integrity, and a deep belief in the potential of Aboriginal youth. His involvement with the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Housing Association further demonstrated his commitment to community wellbeing, advocating for safe, secure, and culturally appropriate housing.
Ivan's exceptional contribution to community and public service was recognised nationally with the Public Service Medal (PSM) — an honour that reflected the impact he had across generations.
Above all, Ivan championed First Nations young people. He believed in their brilliance, their resilience, and their power to move us forward. His legacy lives on in the programs he shaped, the young people he supported, and the organisation he helped strengthen.
ACAS honours Ivan with deep respect and gratitude. His leadership, his kindness, and his unwavering belief in our youth will continue to guide us for many years to come.
