Seventy years ago, Can Assist began with a simple but powerful idea: that no one facing cancer in the country should have to do it alone. 💛💚

From a small group of passionate volunteers in Sydney to more than 50 branches across NSW, our story has always been about community — people helping people.

That same spirit continues today through the incredible work of our volunteers, supporters, and ambassadors.

🎗️ October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Every October, we’re reminded how important it is to talk about breast health — to check in with ourselves, our loved ones, and to spread awareness that can save lives.

In Australia, an estimated 21,200 people were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2024. For women, that’s 1 in 7 over their lifetime. But early detection makes a huge difference — survival rates are now over 90% when found early.

So this month, take a moment for yourself. Do a self-check, book that mammogram you’ve been putting off, and encourage your friends and family to do the same.

Because awareness, action, and community can change lives. 💕

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Lucy was just 5 years old when she was diagnosed. Beau was 8. Both were perfectly healthy children until their families were suddenly faced with the unimaginable.
At Can Assist, we were glad that we could stand beside these families - providing practical & financial support to help ease even a little of the overwhelming pressure and stress they were going through.

The evidence is clear: cancer still costs more in the country.

🟡 43% of patients are in financial distress
🟡 21% are skipping treatment due to cost
🟡 Can Assist has already delivered 42% more support this year

A new parliamentary report confirms what we’ve long known - and calls for an audit of regional cancer centres to find where patients can’t access low-cost or free cancer care. That’s how we fix the cost gap for country patients.
