It is with heavy hearts that we're announcing the cancellation of Interaction 24. This wasn't an easy decision taken by our team, but after a lot of thought and looking at the financial picture, we believe it's the right one.

Our first Edu Summit keynote drop is Leah Heiss!

Leah is a Melbourne-based designer and Monash University academic working at the nexus of design, health and technology.

Her co-design methods have been used to evolve new systems of care for low birth weight, cancer care, eating disorders, aged care, voluntary assisted dying and acquired brain injury. She is currently working with the World Health Organisation, using design strategies to improve the uptake and implementation of WHO guidelines across countries.

Much of Leah’s work focuses on the role of design in improving the lived experience of health technologies and systems, and her wearable technology designs have been exhibited to over 700,000 people across Australia, Europe and Asia.

We are honored to announce Angie Abdilla as a keynote of Interaction 24.

A palawa* woman, Angie Abdilla is the founder and Director of Old Ways, New, an Indigenous-owned and led social enterprise working on projects with Indigenous Custodians, Elders, knowledge holders, and young people to benefit their communities and peoples.

Over the past 10 years, Angie’s interdisciplinary practice has expanded to combine research, strategy, design, and product management of software engineering. Her focus is on reigniting technology with the old ways of thinking, doing and being. Her deep commitment and trust in Indigenous Traditional Knowledges also center her principles, always questioning “who really benefits” within the design and development of frontier technologies.

As a Professor at the Australian National University’s School of Cybernetics, Angie utilizes a range of research agendas and approaches in the development of AI, all dedicated to the creation of technologies that embody the principles of connecting with, and care for Country, and kin.

*palawa are the original peoples of lutruwita - Australia's island state of 'Tasmania' - their homelands for time immemorial.

A big, big thank you to all of you who took that big step in applying to speak at Interaction 24. We received a new record of submissions from the APAC region this year, and are ecstatic about how many of you have expressed interest in speaking at Interaction 24.

Compared to last year, where 11.2% of total submissions were from the Asia-Pacific, this year we registered an impressive 32.1% (!!!) from the region, and more than a third were non-Australian.

Now, the real work begins: our team is going to spend the next few weeks poring over your applications so that we can do justice to the time you dedicated to these proposals.
We should be done with reviews around mid-October, so expect to hear from us after!

Second keynote drop: we’re beyond thrilled to welcome back Dan Hill for Interaction 24!

For those of you who’ve been around for a while, you might remember Dan last spoke at our keynote in Interaction 10, held in Savannah. He’s now a Director at Melbourne School of Design, the graduate school in the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Melbourne. An interaction designer since the mid-90s, his design leadership has produced innovative, influential teams and projects ranging from built environment and architecture, to education and research, government and social innovation, and media.

One of the inaugural Design Advocates for the Mayor of London and a Trustee of Participatory City Foundation, Dan is now on the board of Collingwood Yards in Melbourne and the Advisory Group of Open Systems Lab. He is the author of the books 'Dark Matter & Trojan horses: A strategic design playbook' and 'Designing missions'.

It’s been 13 years since Dan last spoke at Interaction Week, and we look forward to learning about how his work has evolved since.

Announcing our first keynote for Interaction 24!

Parameswaran Venkataraman is co-founder of 3 Big Things, a newly-founded behavioral design consulting practice focused on India.

Over the last 26 years, Param has been in design and innovation leadership roles across companies like IDEO, Fractal.ai, Dr. Reddy’s, and Tata Digital.

We’re stoked to have Param on our program. His work is featured in Designing for Change, a course at IDEO U. He publishes an annual toolkit for applying Mindfulness and Design Thinking principles for personal reflections on the past year and to create a vision for the year ahead, and we’re looking forward to learning from him.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is of outstanding national heritage significance. A major event in Australia's history, its construction completed in 1932 and was pivotal in the development of modern Sydney. The bridge was the most costly engineering achievement in modern Australia, and has become an enduring national icon and the subject for many of Australia’s foremost artists (most notably, The Bridge in Curve by Grace Cossington Smith).

There are more than a few reasons why you should be joining us for Interaction 24, the first Interaction Week that’s happening outside of North America and Europe.

Beyond the Sydney edition being the first Interaction in the APAC region, many of us are extremely excited about taking the plunge about (finally!) visiting Australia. It’s the smallest continent but one of the largest countries on Earth, so we’re not thinking of covering it all in a day… but how about just starting with little ol’ Sydney? After exploring what the city has to offer, merely taking the bus can get you places. There’s the dramatic clifftop walk Diamond Bay has to offer, or Coogee Beach if you fancy a relaxing time at a spot less touristy than the usual Bondi hang. And if you’re feeling up for a train ride, Blue Mountains National Park – an hour away – won’t disappoint with its iconic lookouts and breathtaking waterfalls.

Early Bird tickets are still available, but not for long—on 1 September 2023, tickets will revert to full price.

Here’s a pro tip: the group purchase discount of 20% applies even to the current Early Bird prices… that means you could potentially pay as little as US$480 per ticket. Run, don’t walk!

Our final theme, Regenerate, is about looking beyond sustainability as a critical part of moving forward. How can design take on a broader perspective, embracing solutions that extend beyond users’ and businesses’ needs?

Join us for the Sydney edition of Interaction Week. Early Bird tickets are available now––link in bio.
