Today’s announcement from the Federal Government to increase food relief and financial wellbeing support funding nationally by 25% is greatly appreciated at a time when demand for assistance is surging.

The St Vincent de Paul Society NSW has supported over 100,000 people through our members over the past year with close to $14.3 million in financial and material assistance, more than half of this is funded by the Society NSW. This is the second year in a row our members have experienced this level of need.

Concerningly, demand for emergency relief assistance from our members has risen by nearly 40 per cent since the start of the decade. Food assistance is the most common form of support sought from our members with three in four people doing so in the last financial year.

The additional funding announced today will see our base funding from the federal government in effect doubled for emergency relief over the next five years, allowing our members to provide greater support with food, clothing, household bills and ensuring continuity of support.

We additionally welcome the announcement of an additional $20 million available each year to respond quickly in the event of natural disasters. This past year has seen communities in Northern NSW experience multiple crises and as these events becoming more frequent and intense it is vital that support is available to provide immediate and ongoing support.

The Society has been calling on the Federal Government to respond to these pressures and we thank Social Services Minister Tanya Plibersek for acting on this important reform which will provide much-needed relief for people facing hardship.
