From 2–8 August, a team of volunteers from Australia, Ukraine, US and New Zealand travelled to Posad-Pokrovske in Kherson Oblast, just 30 km from Kherson, as part of a project supported by United Ukraine Appeal and Waves of Hope Ukraine, to rebuild a home for a local family.
The village was occupied and heavily damaged by Russian forces before being liberated in 2022. Today, it remains close to the front line, with regular air-raid sirens and drones overhead.
We built a home for Olya and her husband Petya. During the invasion, Olya and her children hid for days before being evacuated under shelling. After leaving Ukraine, she chose to return three years ago and rebuild her life at home.
Despite temperatures in the high 30s and difficult conditions, our team worked together to give her family something simple but incredibly important: a safe place to call home again.
