Last Friday, our Members visited beneath the surface of Sydney Harbour for a fascinating February Club Lunch with marine wildlife scientist Vanessa Pirotta.
From the whales and dolphins of our own harbour to groundbreaking conservation technology, Vanessa shared how innovation is reshaping wildlife protection, including her pioneering “whale snot” drones that collect vital DNA samples, and AI tools helping combat illegal wildlife trafficking.
We were privileged to welcome April and Jasmin Allende from the Gamay Rangers, who shared the intricate and courageous process of safely disentangling whales from fishing nets.
Some incredible insights we’re still thinking about:
• A humpback whale can be the length of our entire dining room.
• A whale’s fluke (tail) is as unique as a human fingerprint.
• Each whale carries an extraordinary story about the health of our oceans.
Vanessa’s work, from the Tongan Whale Tourism Project to Wild Sydney Harbour, reflects science at its most impactful: accessible, collaborative and deeply connected to community.
An unforgettable afternoon of conservation, leadership and awe. 🌊💙
