Accounting For Nature

Accounting For Nature A world-leading environmental accounting framework to inform better investment, policy and management decisions in natural capital.

Accounting for Nature is a not-for-profit venture established to provide a scientific, practical and cost-effective way of measuring, verifying, reporting and certifying changes in the health of environmental assets at property, landscape and national scales.

Think about the passion we bring to sport.

The rivalries. The stats. The scoreboards. The way we track every play, every gain, every moment that matters.

Now ask yourself, why don’t we bring that same energy to nature?

Today, we’re launching Accounting for Nature’s new campaign: Know the Score.

Because while we obsess over performance in sport, nature, the system that underpins our economy, our wellbeing, and our future, has largely gone unscored.

For too long, we’ve accepted the idea that nature is too complex to measure.
That changes now.

💡 From idea to global standard
Built on over a decade of development and foundational work of the Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists, the Accounting for Nature® Framework has been operationalised into a globally applied certification standard, answering a question many once thought too hard:

Can you measure the state of nature in a way that is consistent, credible, and comparable?

The answer is now clear.

Today, the Framework has been applied across nearly 10 million hectares, spanning vegetation, soil, fauna, and ecosystem functions, with independent verification to ensure results you can trust.

That’s the equivalent of around 14 million rugby fields of nature being measured, tracked, and scored.

This isn’t theory. It’s proven, at scale.

At Accounting for Nature, we’ve built a science-backed, independently verified way to measure and track the state of nature over time, through Environmental Accounts and the Econd®, creating a clear, credible scoreboard for nature.

In sport, measurement drives performance, investment, and accountability.
We believe nature deserves the same.

Because if you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it, and you can’t invest in it with confidence.

To bring this campaign to life, we’ve thoughtfully used AI as a creative tool, not as a replacement for reality, but as a way to amplify the message. AI has helped us visualise a world where nature is tracked, scored, and understood with the same clarity as sport.

But the intent is clear: we don’t want a future where nature is only experienced through technology. We want a future where better measurement leads to better decisions and real-world outcomes for nature.

This is about shifting nature from something we talk about to something we can measure, manage, and improve.

It’s time to bring the same passion, precision, and performance mindset from sport…

…to the natural world.

Will you change the game for nature?

Know the score. Make nature count.

From Manning Valley legend to global nature-accounting hero!

Move over poets, journalists, athletes and all the other famous figures from the Manning Valley’s rich history, because one of our very own board members has just been spotlighted among them!

Yep Dr Ken Henry, the former Treasury boss, tax reform guru and all-round legend, is officially in the history books alongside the Valley’s all-stars. And honestly, we’re not surprised. After all, when you’ve gone from Taree to Canberra to the boardroom of Accounting for Nature, you’ve earned more than just a footnote.

Not only has Ken helped shape economic policy at the highest levels in Australia, but he’s also been a tireless advocate for nature, from chairing big reviews to championing better biodiversity law and championing environmental accounts that actually count.

So here’s to history in the making and to the kind of leadership that blends brains, wit and genuine love for this beautiful planet.

Drop a 💚 below if you think Ken’s Manning Valley roots gave him the best foundation for thinking big and acting boldly!

Happy New Year from Accounting for Nature!

As we step into 2026, we’re excited to continue working with the people and organisations committed to measuring nature, understanding impact, and driving real, verifiable change.

Last year, together, we strengthened how nature is measured and understood, from the growth of Certified Environmental Accounts to the expansion of our expert and auditor community, and progress in carbon unit linking through the Nxt.CarbonPlus™ pilot program.

This year, our focus remains the same: helping landholders, organisations, investors and partners take action that truly benefits nature — backed by science, data and transparency.

To our community of experts, landholders, collaborators, funders and philanthropic supporters: thank you for joining us on this journey. Your commitment ensures that every claim about nature is trustworthy, repeatable, and meaningful.

As the holiday season draws to a close, we hope you’ve had time to rest, reset and enjoy the break. Our offices reopen on Monday 5 January, and we look forward to reconnecting and continuing the journey together.

Here’s to a year of measured progress, restored landscapes, and nature outcomes. Together, let’s make 2026 a year where nature’s value is seen, measured, and protected.

As the year comes to a close, we’re grateful for our community committed to caring for people and nature, now and into the future.

In 2025, more landholders, organisations, investors and practitioners chose to measure nature using evidence and science, helping demonstrate real, verifiable change across ecosystems and landscapes.

This year included:
• 78 Environmental Accounts (including 102 Asset Accounts), made up of 38 Registered and 40 Certified Environmental Accounts
• 26 Accredited Methods available in the Method Catalogue, with many more in development
• A growing network of Accredited Experts and Accredited Auditors, providing scientific rigour and independent assurance
• Organisations and landholders using Certified Environmental Accounts to support credible nature and climate-related decisions
• Continued global application of the Framework and partnerships
• Progress in carbon unit linking, including the Nxt.CarbonPlus™ pilot, exploring how environmental accounts can support credible nature-based carbon outcomes

None of this would be possible without the people who safeguard the integrity of the Accounting for Nature® Framework.

Thank you to our Board, team, and Standards & Integrity Committee for their leadership and oversight; to our Accredited Experts, Accredited Auditors, Method Authors and Managers; and to the landholders and Account Holders doing the hard work on the ground.

A special thank you to our Independent Science Committee, whose guidance and oversight are central to maintaining the Framework’s credibility.

As a not-for-profit, we’re also deeply grateful to our collaborators, funders and philanthropic partners for their continued support.

As we look ahead, one thing remains clear:
🌱 Nature-positive outcomes start with credible measurement.

With the holiday season upon us, we wish our community a safe and well-earned break. Our office will be closed from 24 December 2025 and will reopen on Monday, 5 January 2026.

Thank you for being part of the journey and we look forward to continuing the work together in 2026 to .

Accounting for Nature in Brussels

Our COO, Dr Rachael Marshall, recently represented Accounting for Nature in Brussels, connecting with key organisations shaping Europe’s sustainability landscape.

Brussels, a hub for international policy and innovation and where chocolate and waffles lurk around every corner. Between meetings, we sure hope Rachael sampled some iconic Belgian treats, a reminder that even sustainability champions need a sweet break.

During her visit, Rachael met with the European Landowners' Organization (ELO) to explore collaboration opportunities and share updates on the Accounting for Nature® Framework.

She also engaged with the RSM Belgium sustainability team to highlight how our Accredited Auditors support integrity in environmental accounts and the importance of expanding our auditor network across Europe.

As an ISEAL Community Member, we observed EU regulators, businesses, and voluntary sustainability standards discussing the evolving sustainability agenda at the ISEAL EU Sustainability Policy Forum.

The key takeaway: regulations set the floor, but voluntary standards raise the ceiling. A “smart mix” of both is essential, businesses need harmonisation, credibility relies on evidence and strong assurance, and consumers demand third-party verified claims to cut through greenwashing.

Our Framework is part of this mix, helping organisations credibly measure and report the state of nature with integrity to policymakers, investors, markets, and stakeholders.

Connect with us continue as we continue to explore opportunities to expand internationally and contribute to building high-integrity nature markets globally.
