Today at Parliament House in Canberra, Peter Garrett joined distinguished Australians — Admiral (Ret) Chris Barrie AC, Karina Lester and Leanne Minshull (with Dr Carmen Lawrence in WA) — to launch a nationwide Public Inquiry into AUKUS. Peter will serve as Lead Commissioner of the inquiry.
"There is nothing more important to a nation than fully understanding its responsibilities to care for its citizens and provide a safe environment for Australians and successive generations to flourish in peace and security. To that end, any decision by an Australian government to commit a massive amount of expenditure to one particular form of defence — in this case, the AUKUS nuclear-powered submarines — needs to be very well understood.
“AUKUS is by far the most expensive and complex undertaking ever entered into by any Australian government, and yet the opportunity to question, debate and decide has been taken out of the hands of the parliament and the people. A public inquiry into this massive spend of taxpayers’ money is long overdue.” — Peter Garrett
The inquiry aims to provide a platform for public scrutiny, informed debate and democratic participation on one of the most significant policy decisions in Australia's history. Australians from all walks of life and backgrounds, and anyone with an interest in AUKUS, are invited to make submissions and participate in the process.
