U SIDNEJU OBILJEZENA 34. GODISNJICA CLANSTVA REPUBLIKE BOSNE I HERCEGOVINE U ORGANIZACIJI UJEDINJENIH NACIJA
Sydney, Australia
THE 34TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE REPUBLIC OF BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA'S MEMBERSHIP IN THE UNITED NATIONS WAS MARKED IN SYDNEY.
Sydney, Australia
LOCATED AT EAST RIVER 92.
By: Fahir Zečević
The Bosnian Community Council NSW Sydney-BCC traditionally marks May 22nd the day when the flag with lilies of the recognized state of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina flew on the East River in New York in 1992. Hence all the nonsense that it is a war flag, because lilies symbolize Bosnia through the centuries as a feature of all the peoples who live in it. So, lilies are not the privilege of a nation, as they have been trying to abuse it for 34 years.
That this was the case was confirmed at another gathering of memories of those days, when there was a fierce political struggle for the status of a member of the United Nations, with too much disputation and little support. Luckily, the persistent patriots were wise and managed to make the RBiH recognized throughout the world. At that time, at the event in Sydney, in Auburn, we were reminded with a video presentation of the raising of the flag of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the East River and the historic speech of Haris Silajdžić, the then Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Safet Alispahić, President of the Council of the BiH Community, confirmed all this in his address and made it better clear to the guests present from the social, political and life in Sydney. One gets the impression that this was well understood, because the distinguished guests in their address all congratulated this day in the recent history of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the day when the official identity card of our homeland was obtained. We would like to emphasize the satisfaction of Greg Stone and Glenn Elmore for their cooperation with BCC NSW so far, the first on behalf of the United Peace Federation for Oceania, the second on behalf of the Cumberland Council NSW, in whose area the Bosnian Community Council NSW operates.
That is why, not without reason, it is said that May 22, 1992 is the second highest ranking on the list of historical dates of modern Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The first Ambassador of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the United Nations, Muhamed Šaćirbey, confirmed all this as a living participant in that turbulent time, addressing by video link from Philadelphia (USA). In the conversation in English, we talked about the past (past), present (present) and future (future), first of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina and then only Bosnia and Herzegovina. Since 1995 and after the Dayton Peace Agreement, our first homeland has been disputed by neighbors and neighbors, very often by the international community, as well as by those who do so within the borders of Bosnia and Herzegovina - but it has survived, because there are certainly more people who love it than those who do not know it. For this reason, this gathering was held, as well as all of these species in the countries where the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina live in the white world.
Of course, there were reasons to rejoice, which was the responsibility of the Modra Rijeka Choir, which performed beautiful songs from its rich repertoire and bare the souls of all those present. Throughout its three-decade existence, this Choir has always been an example of cohesive action, at all events in the Bosnian community, not only in Sydney, but throughout Australia. There was also a sevdalinka soloist Ekrem Kobić, a member of the Sydney sevdah.
It all ended in a picnic mood, good ćevapčići and friendly communication, on May 23, 2026, when we talked about the bright and honourable moments of our dear homeland – Bosnia and Herzegovina – in one history class.
