Ramadan Mubarak. A couple of days late but wishing all the peace and blessings of this holy month to all, Muslim and non-Muslim, in my homelands of Australia, UK and Ireland and around the world. May these next few weeks bring the world to a gentler more peaceful place where we all, regardless of our status, influence or power, and regardless of our faith and our tribe, treat everyone with kindness and respect.
Do revisit - or visit for the first time if you’re new here - the recipes and family stories of migration. I hope they help us understand our world a little better. They come with my love and those of each and every contributor.

Eid al-Fitr Mubarak for the end of Ramadan wherever you may be.

It’s so hard to find meaningful words with such immense and immeasurable suffering in Gaza but I just want to say I am thinking of you, your families and the whole community - particularly those in Gaza - and share your horror, grief and helplessness. This Eid must be the saddest and most heartbreaking ever. After the most difficult Ramadan.

It’s hard to feel any optimism but may today be a day of peace in which faith can provide a glimmer of hope for a just and lasting peace (at the moment impossible to imagine)… and that it reinforces our love and gratitude for our families and friends and our support for those who cannot protect themselves.

Sending you (whoever you may be reading this) love and big hugs on this holy day.

The sighting of the new moon on Monday night heralded the start of Ramadan for most Muslims in Australia. This year the month of self-sacrifice, charity, prayer and forgiveness is overshadowed by the dreadful suffering in Gaza. Elsewhere too but the scale of the death, destruction and injury eclipses anything else. The UN believes more children have died in Gaza than in the last 4 years of wars around the world… Heaven alone knows how many are injured. Or how many left without parents or family. They are in our prayers. I will not be collecting family recipes and stories as I have done for the last 4 years. But there are more than 60 recipes from 22 countries on the site and you might like to use the recipes to host a Iftar or dinner party and to suggest your family, friends, colleagues donate what they might spend at a restaurant to provide food to the starving in Gaza. I e worked with the three charities I’ve tagged here but feel free to choose your own

I’m unable to run Recipes for Ramadan in the full on way I have for the last 4 years but we now have more that 60 recipes from 22 countries with a few more to add and I’d like to suggest that host their own Iftar (or dinner party if you’re not Muslim), using the recipes and asking your guests to donate to one of the charities still managing to deliver aid on the ground in Gaza. I have worked with Gaza Childrens Fund; Human Appeal Australia; and PennyAppeal all of whom have local people on the ground. Your donations could help feed a few starving families.
Tell your guests what you’re cooking, share the recipes and stories from the site and in particular remember and support the people of Palestine at this relentlessly horrendous time 🇵🇸
