One of our participants has set himself a savings goal, and collecting bottles and cans through Return and Earn is helping him get there.

It's not a quick way to save money. Ten cents at a time means collecting a lot of containers and making plenty of trips to the machine. But he keeps showing up and putting the effort in.

Like a lot of goals, it's less about one big moment and more about consistency over time.

It's his goal, his plan and his money. Our role is simply to provide support that fits around what's important to him.

Small steps count. Nice work 😊

“Psychosocial disability” is one of those terms that people hear all the time but what does it *actually* mean? In short - and in the NDIS world - it refers to a permanent or likely permanent disability that arises from a severe mental health condition.

If we split the word in to it’s two key components - “psycho” (coming from “psychological”) and “social” - it starts to make more sense. Psychosocial refers to the way a persons internal world (thoughts, feelings and emotions) interacts with their external world (relationships, family, work and greater community).

This distinction allows the NDIA to separate diagnosis from impact and really look at a persons experience and support needs.

Two people can have exactly the same diagnosis but experience it very differently. Where one person may manage their day-to-day life independently, another may need significant supports to participate in every day activities.

It all comes down to the individual and their personal circumstances and how they experience the world.

Humans First is one of our CHOICE values, and it's a simple one.
It means that we always see you as a person before you're a participant, a plan or a diagnosis.

It also means we don't decide what you need or make any assumptions based on where you're from, what language you speak at home or what your family looks like. We ask you your preferences and listen instead.

Many of the women in the families we work with are carers.

They are the mums, daughters, wives, sisters, aunties and grandmothers who keep everything moving. They book appointments, coordinate supports, attend meetings, make phone calls, provide care and hold families together through challenging times.

Often, they don't see themselves as carers.

It's simply what they do for the people they love.

Yet caring for others can take a significant toll on your own wellbeing, especially when there is little time left to focus on yourself.

If you're the person everyone turns to, this is your reminder that your health matters too.

Carer Gateway offers free counselling, coaching and support services for carers.

October is National Multicultural Mental Health Month.

Most of what gets written about mental health in multicultural communities comes back to stigma. That people don't talk about it, that families keep things quiet. There's some truth in it, but if you've grown up in one of these families you'll know it isn't the whole story.

What it skips is how much looking after each other already happens naturally. Sometimes, at the kitchen table. At the mosque, the church, the temple. In the aunty who notices something's off before anyone's said a word, or the cousin who turns up with food and doesn't ask why.

That's support. It counts.

For some people it's enough on its own. For others it helps to have something alongside it, and asking for that doesn't mean the rest of it stopped working.

Talking about mental health isn't always easy when you’re speaking in a language that isn’t your first language, it can be even harder to explain how you’re feeling. Some mental health words and concepts don’t translate directly across languages and cultures, making it difficult to find the words that feel right.

If English is not your preferred language, you can ask for an interpreter when speaking with a doctor or mental health service. Many services provide this free of charge.

You can also ask to speak with a doctor or mental health professional who speaks your language or understands your cultural background.

Help is available even when finding the words is difficult 🦋

When actions speak louder than words - behaviour can be a powerful way of communicating unmet needs;

A behaviour that feels challenging can be a sign of frustration that hasn’t found the words yet. It can be a response to overstimulation, change in routine or a general sense of overwhelm. It could also simply be someone communicating exactly what they need in the only way they know how to in that moment.

At Enableability, we believe that true understanding and person centred practice is a blend of curiosity, conversation, observation and collaboration.

It starts with being curious and asking questions rather than making assumptions. Open conversations with the person help us understand their experiences, preferences and needs, while observation helps us notice what’s happening around them, what’s working and how they respond to different approaches.

Collaboration brings the people around them into the conversation too - family, support workers, professionals and other people who know them well. By bringing these perspectives together, we can build a more holistic understanding of what’s happening and what the person may be communicating and how we can better meet their needs.

Because when we take the time to understand the whole person, we can provide support that works with them, not just respond to the behaviour.

What's one thing you wish people understood better about behaviour?

Cooking has become one of Michael’s favourite things to do, and for him, it all starts with choosing the best, freshest produce he can find.

Along the way, Michael loves chatting with the stallholders, asking where the produce comes from, how it’s grown and what’s in season. With each visit, he’s becoming a little more confident striking up a conversation.

Michael set himself a goal: to eat healthier, home-cooked meals more often. So, a trip to Paddy’s Markets became part of his routine, where he takes his time wandering the stalls and choosing fresh fruit and vegetables for the week ahead.

Each trip to the markets builds on the last, and so does Michael’s confidence, both in the kitchen and out in the world.

Nice work Michael 👨‍🍳 🥦🍉
