What happens when artists speak out for Palestine?
In 2024, pianist Jayson Gillham dedicated a performance to journalists in Gaza and spoke about their killing.
Soon after, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra cancelled his next performance, stating they do not allow “personal political views” on stage.
He is now taking them to court, in what could become a landmark free speech case in Australia.
This case goes beyond one artist. It raises a critical question: What happens when artists speak out for Palestine?
At a time when many institutions have stayed silent, this trial puts a spotlight on those who refuse to.
The trial begins May 18 at the Federal Court in Melbourne and is expected to run for three weeks.
What happens next could shape whether people can speak out against injustice, or be pushed out for doing so.
