RAHUL GANDHI AND PRIYANKA GANDHI DETAINED IN DELHI FOR DEMANDING FAIR ELECTIONS
New Delhi, 7 October 2026: Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were detained by Delhi Police on Wednesday while leading an Opposition protest against the Election Commission of India.
Opposition MPs were travelling by bus to Jantar Mantar, the city's designated protest site, when police stopped them. The leaders then staged a sit-in at a roundabout near the Shangri-La hotel in central Delhi.
Police carried Rahul Gandhi on their shoulders and put him in a bus. Priyanka Gandhi and other women leaders lay on the road holding a copy of the Constitution before a large team of women police removed them. Rahul Gandhi was taken to Barakhamba Road police station, and Priyanka Gandhi and others to Chhatrasal Stadium. Both were released a little after 8pm.
"They are beating members of Parliament," Priyanka Gandhi said, adding that she had been thrown to the ground and scratched by police.
Rahul Gandhi said the Opposition would keep protesting until Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resigns, calling it a fight to protect the Constitution and the voice of the people. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said the party is ready to take to the streets as many times as needed to save the Constitution and democracy.
The Opposition has been raising serious concerns about the voter list revision (SIR), large-scale deletion of names and the independence of the Election Commission. On 2 October, nearly 1,000 protesters, including AAP leaders and student groups, were detained near Jantar Mantar while demanding the CEC's resignation.
Every citizen's vote must count. A free and fair election is the foundation of our democracy.
