Disability Pride Sydney

Disability Pride Sydney Event organisers, advocates, running Australia's annual disability pride fest Who We Are
We are an initiative of people with disabilities.

We are a movement of people with disabilities in Sydney who want to bring the disability pride movement to Australia. We organise Australia's only annual disability pride festival and run events throughout the year. The organisers are volunteers with disabilities. All performers and speakers are people with disabilities. We invite you to stand (or sit) with us. This is an event celebrating all p

eople with a disability

Our Aims
- In the tradition of Disability Pride, we seek to to reclaim identity, instil pride and reduce stigma. Like other Disability Pride events across the globe, we seek to turn current treatment and attitudes towards disability on their heads.
_We are about celebration, solidarity and protest for all people with disabilities.
- We want to challenge the harassment, bullying, discrimination and the negativity that people with disability face
- We seek to remember those lost and fight back against erasure by boldly asserting our common humanity.
- We want to celebrate people with disabilities as unique, valuable, valid and distinctive people with rights to be proud of who they are.
- To put a local resonance on a global movement and begin the Inner West’s journey to join other cities as a Disability Pride host. Currently, we are Australia's only annual disability pride event, despite the global movement being decades old. We held the first Pride Fest in 2021 and hope to hold annual events and make them bigger and better each time.

The federal government is in the process of gutting the NDIS and withdrawing the supports disabled people rely on to live every day lives. The NSW government is not ready to fill the gap. Call on Chris Minns to take action.

All people with disability deserve the right to full inclusion and participation in our community, with autonomy and choice to live safe, dignified lives. Critical to this right is the essential, daily, foundational support services that many people with disability rely on and are entitled to.

Lets take a moment to say wow!!! Take pride in ourselves. They tried to silence us and we rose up. The designer of the disability pride flag told us she chose black as the background for our flag because it is both the colour of mourning and oppression....and the colour of ninja warriors!

Angry but not surprised to hear that NT police will not be bringing charges against the person responsible for the death of disabled First Nations man Kunanjayi White who did not survive contact with police in a supermarket.

One group of coppers found another group of coppers had nothing to answer for.

"In preparation for the inquest Commissioner Dole said the agency was reviewing its policies guiding interactions with people with disabilities." Yeah, that'll help - not.

Sending love and solidarity to the First Nations community, especially those who are disabled..

The Northern Territory police commissioner says the cause of 24-year-old Kumanjayi White's death in custody remains undetermined, with the criminal case against the officers who restrained him now closed.

A sad reality of life for disabled people is we are vulnerable to government employees retaliating against us. Unfortunately, some disabled people are afraid to make submissions to the NDIS inquiry because they think it might be used as evidence in the ART or in some other way.

This is a complex law, with various nuances, but as a gneeral rule, submissions to parlaimentary inquiries cannot be used as evidence in Tribunals, and you can't penalise people for them.

NB: not official legal advice.

Disability Pride Sydney is running drop in sessions 12-1pm every day Sunday-Friday to help you make a submission to the inquiry into the NDIS bill. The organiser is a law PhD student and experienced professional writing teacher who has taught writing to United Nations lawyers. Help might be as simple as body doubling together, sharing ideas, or it might invovled telling us your ideas so we can put them in a submission .

he more we learn about the NDIS cuts, the more we are frightened. These cuts are a direct attack on disability pride.
