🎉 Today we're celebrating 50 years of The Haymarket Foundation.

On World Homeless Day, we're proud to launch our 50th Anniversary logo and begin celebrating five decades of supporting people experiencing homelessness, harm related to alcohol and other drug use, trauma and social isolation.

This milestone belongs to everyone who has been part of our journey: the people we support, our staff, volunteers, donors, partners and community.

Every meal shared, every safe place provided and every life changed has been made possible by people who believe that everyone deserves dignity, compassion and the opportunity to build a better future.

One of those lives belongs to Corey, a participant in our Bourke Street Program.

While much has changed over the past 50 years, unfortunately the need for our services remains as strong as ever.

Bernie's Story: Preventing homelessness before it happens

This Homelessness Week, we're sharing Bernie's story.

Bernie is a proud Barkindji woman who was referred to Haymarket's Early Intervention program while living in an unsafe housing situation. She could no longer remain where she was living and was at real risk of homelessness.

With the right support at the right time, Bernie was able to secure safe housing, regain stability, and reunite with her daughters.

Her story reminds us that homelessness is not inevitable. While crisis responses are essential, one of the most effective ways to address homelessness is to prevent it from happening in the first place.

Thanks to a StreetSmart Australia Community Grant, our frontline team recently undertook training designed to strengthen confidence, reduce stress, and support staff wellbeing in complex and demanding environments.

For a team working alongside people experiencing homelessness, the work can be unpredictable and emotionally demanding. Investing in the skills and support behind that work means staff feel more prepared, more supported, and better able to respond consistently.

As one team member shared:
“Working with people in crisis who also have very complex needs, having the right tools is so important… I already used some of the techniques.”

Thank you to StreetSmart for backing practical support that strengthens staff wellbeing and helps sustain this work over time.

And a big "thank you" to our incredible team for their passion and commitment.

Our new Crisis Centre is already changing lives.

We are supporting more people with complex needs, including many who have been sleeping rough for years and are accessing support for the first time.

For many, having a private room for the first time is life-changing. But after experiencing homelessness, maintaining a home can be challenging.

With your help, we can provide the practical, one-on-one support people need to build confidence, develop essential living skills and successfully transition into, and sustain, long-term housing.

➡ $75 can provide one-on-one budgeting and financial literacy support.
➡ $120 can fund cleaning and hygiene support for three days.
➡ $250 can provide cooking, nutrition and meal planning support for one week.

This role plays an important part in ensuring we deliver safe, consistent, and person-centred support to people experiencing homelessness.
We are looking for someone who is detail-oriented, collaborative, and motivated to strengthen systems that improve outcomes for clients and staff.

“My life was in danger. I was forced to escape to stay alive.”

Alex fled extreme violence and discrimination and came to Sydney seeking safety.

What he didn’t expect was to end up homeless.

“When I arrived, I had nowhere to go. I slept at Central Station until someone told me about The Haymarket Foundation.”

At our Crisis Centre, Alex found safety and stability - a place to stay, a warm meal, mental and physical health care, and support to secure an asylum seeker visa and rebuild his life.

Today, Alex is working full‑time, living in his own home, and building a future with purpose.

Right now, we’re welcoming more people facing complex homelessness than ever before. We need your help so more people like Alex can find safety and stability when they need it most.
