Here’s an insight from our Scout Leader, Thanks for sharing Dundee!

The other day our I took out my Scout group on a Bush Blitz activity developed by Earthwatch Institute Australia utilising iNaturalist. My scouts absolutely loved it. They were engaged, quick to learn the process and wanted to out compete each other on who could photograph and record the most number of organisms. By end of the day we had 150+ records created. We und took this acting in a local remnant Iron Bark Forest. Through this activity the scouts were aware their records will be reviewed by specialists to confirm ID and they are contributing to scientific exploration of their local area. But without knowing they all where all developing a greater connection to their local biodiversity and natural bushland environment.

Thanks again Earthwatch Institute Australia for this great program you have developed for our youth.

One of the things we love about Scouting at 1st Narellan is getting young people outdoors and giving them the chance to experience nature for themselves.

In September our Scouts headed out on a night hike along the Nepean River. They were lucky enough to have a Powerful Owl watching over us while we stopped for a rest.

The Scouts and leaders explored the environmental challenges facing our local bushland and river system environment. We also switched off our torches to experience the darkness and then used UV torches to discover fungi and lichens that we would normally miss.

Our leaders at 1st Narellan are committed to creating opportunities for young people to explore, ask questions, learn and build a connection with the natural world.

If we want young people to care about the environment, they need the opportunity to experience it. Scouting at 1st Narellan gives them this opportunity just like this night hike.

It is with great pride and gratitude that I announce Anamaria Rivas and George Zorbas have been awarded the Special Service Award in today's Scouts Australia Adult Recognition Awards on World Scout Day.

The Late Anamaria Rivas has been recognised for her service to Scouting at 1st Narellan, 1st Cobbitty/Oran Park and Razorback Scout groups in many roles over the last 5 years.

Through her commitment and dedication to these roles, Anamaria has provided essential support to these Groups, guiding them in their growth and evolution, and providing sound financial wisdom to ensure their viability, financial security and the purchase of new and improved equipment.

Despite failing health in late 2025, Anamaria’s commitment to Scouting was unwavering. It is with profound regret that Anamaria is not with us today to receive this Award, but her legacy of service and dedication to the Scouting community will live on and she will be forever in our hearts.

George has been recognised for his service to 1st Narellan and Razorback Scout groups as Secretary and Treasurer, respectively, over the last 9 years.

Providing sound secretarial and fiscal support, George has graciously given of his time and energy, willingly and conscientiously providing regular and sustained support and ‘on the ground’ assistance at all fundraising efforts held by these groups.

Although George has stepped down from these roles, he continues to remain a supporter of Scouting at 1st Narellan.

We thank you, Anamaria and George, for your service and support of Scouting! BRAVO! 👏⚜️
