日本語↓ 18kg collected this August 💪We were blessed with beautiful weather at the beach for our August clean up! It had been just over a year since we cleaned at Brighton, but the litter issue was unfortunately unchanged. Bushes hedging the beach were home to all sorts of rubbish that had most likely blown in from the footpath and road. One thing that I am often bothered by, is the fact that people use overflowing bins to dispose of their rubbish in. This is really no different from littering, as the rubbish ends up being blown around everywhere or attacked by birds. Our volunteers got into as many nooks and crannies as possible, and a new volunteer was particularly surprised by how many cigarette butts they discovered. While many members of the public cheered us on, I hoped that seeing us also planted a seed in their minds about the effect of their individual actions on our environment. Recently, I heard one of my favourite songs from my childhood in the supermarket, 'Where is the Love' by Black Eyed Peas. I thought about what I am doing to bring more love into our society, and how Green Bird is definitely one way that I am trying to do this. The kindness of our volunteers, and the kindness we spread through our actions is powerful and what we need more of in the world.🫶 See you again later this September!

日本語↓39 KG collected 😱 Thank you to those who joined our cleanup over the weekend. It was our first time cleaning up around the Broadway Shopping Centre and Ultimo area. At first, many people found that there wasn't as much rubbish as they had expected, but before long we were filling our bags as usual with all sorts of waste, including Uno cards and koala stickers.

Even things like stickers, which may seem harmless to drop on the ground, are often made of plastic and contribute to the wave of microplastics entering our local waterways every day.

As I watched our volunteers scoop up hundreds of cigarette butts with their green bird gloves, I felt so proud of the community we've created here, and of the amazing people who care enough about our city to get out and make it cleaner and more pleasant for everybody.

I was also very grateful to our volunteers for being so understanding that I had to take care of my daughter during this month's cleanup because my husband was sick. As a result, I couldn't actually take part in the cleanup myself. I was there only as a guide, and without even being asked, our volunteers took the lead by helping me take photos and weigh the bags of rubbish we collected.

I really couldn't do it without the help of all the people around me every month. It's thanks to you that this organisation can continue to exist, so please know that everything you do is truly appreciated.

I'm already looking forward to our beach cleanup in August! I hope to see you there. 🌊

日本語↓ This month, our volunteers ventured to Marrickville for the first time. We focused on the main streets, to both draw attention and because I thought we would find the most rubbish there. It wasn't overly dirty on a surface level, but as usual, there was no shortage of small pieces of plastic and cigarette butts. In total, we managed to collect 18.5 kg of rubbish in 1.5 hours! The weather was perfect and we were encouraged by several residents who stopped us to thank us and comment on our work. We had quite an international group this time, with volunteers from South America, Japan, Korea, the UK, and of course, Australia. Thank you to the large group that joined us, despite the trackwork and slightly more challenging location to get to. You are much, much appreciated 🫶🏻🌿

日本語↓ Due to the rain, it was very touch and go this month as to whether we could go ahead with the clean up. It was sunny when I left home but raining when we reached the meeting point! But despite the weather, our regular volunteers, as well as some newcomers showed up to clean up! We started and Central and walked towards Town Hall. In 1.5 hours, I didn't think we would make it all the way because we would have a lot of work to do, and I was right. George Street is a hotspot for all kinds of littering...And as a result, we managed to collect 25 kilograms of rubbish! I don't think an exclamation mark is quite right, because it's sad that so much has ended up on our streets and in our waterways as a result. But I am nevertheless proud of our team of volunteers. Thank you to all who attended! I look forward to seeing you next month again☺️

日本語↓ A couple of weeks ago, our team made it to Epping for the first time to check out the rubbish situation there! The following blog was written by James. I just added the Japanese. Thank you so much for stepping up to help with this clean James and friends! It means a lot 👏🌿

Epping seems like a relatively well looked after place, which was clear when we passed through Forest Park and found it spotless. The people who live in the suburb took genuine interest in our cleanup with jokes and inquiries. The usual items we encounter were still there, with many ci******es and mentos packets. After cleaning the streets nearby the station, which did have high amounts of trash, we ended in the lovely Boronia Park. There were a lot volunteers of all ages, showing that care for the environment has no age limitations. I was particularly proud of the turnout. In total, 29 volunteers collected 12.45kgs worth of rubbish!

日本語↓This month's haul: 13.5 kg of rubbish in 1.5 hours. Our clean up was postponed by one week due to the weather. So in the end, we cleaned up on Valentine's Day! Thank you to the volunteers that came out on this day to have a date with Green Bird 🫣. We started at Darling Square, focusing on small pieces of rubbish. As we moved towards Chinatown, we encountered the usual issue - rubbish stuck in planter grates. It is always disappointing to see how much rubbish finds its way into these grates around local trees. I wonder if it is due to direct littering, or rubbish falling off overflowing bins. The drains themselves were also a sight to behold..and all of that rubbish will eventually find its way into Sydney Harbour (I recommend checking out the work Seabin Project does to see how much of our trash is ending up in the sea around Sydney). As usual, we attracted a lot of eyes during the clean. A guy even joked with us, pointing to a tree and saying, "Look, a green bird!"
But that type of attention is also good. We are reminding those around us about the severity of the environmental issues we face, and hopefully encouraging more collective action...Reflecting on the words of a volunteer recently who mentioned the 'greenbird vision' he gains after a clean up, I also hope the public starts to notice how much rubbish there really is surrounding them. I think our activities definitely help with this. Sometimes it's the small pieces that have the largest impact. I look forward to our next clean on Clean Up Australia Day! Won't you join in too? 😌

日本語↓Sometimes I feel like the Green Bird goddess is shining on us, because we often get good luck with the weather! Our January clean up was no exception. If the clean up had been the day before, I would have had to reschedule it due to extreme heat. At the same time, rain was forecast in the afternoon on the day of the clean. But the morning was just right! No rain and a cool day. Perfect to get stuck into the planters and roadsides of Strathfield. Our small-ish team of 15 picked up 16.8 kilograms of rubbish in just an hour and a half! And we could have kept going, except our bags were completely full and we ended up walking back to the starting point having to leave rubbish behind. What struck me and other volunteers this month was the immediate effect our activities can have on those around us. Smokers who were smoking nearby walked over to the bin to dispose of their ci******es. A man started giving me a lecture on not throwing cans into the bin because people collect them to recycle for money. I was going to mention to him how we find a lot of can tabs (the tab you lift to open the canned product) on the roads, and how these are dangerous to wildlife, but I decided against it. It was clear that our activities had left some type of impression on him, which is the goal anyway. All of the volunteers that came were there because they care about the environment, and want to turn their concerns into action. Whether they are locals, or from Japan, Korea, the Czech Republic or Argentina, we all share a common goal in wanting our cities and our Earth to be cleaner! Thank you for showing our local community that everyone is capable of making change through their own, individual actions. See you again in February when we return to Darling Harbour!

And that's a wrap!🎁 We finished off 2025 by doing a Hyde Park clean, and continued to pick up rubbish until we reached a Christmas tree at Martin Place. As this is a time of year where we show our gratitude to those around us, I want to say a very big thank you to everyone who has turned up this year to make a small social contribution and set a good example to those around us. We often feel powerless in the face of the environmental challenges our society and world are facing, but by showing up to clean up, our volunteers have shown the wider community that individuals can take steps to do better, and that our world is in our own hands.

Rubbish picked up: 16.3 kilograms!
Considering our group was on the small side this month, I think it's amazing what we managed to pick up in only 1.5 hours.

Merry Christmas to both our regular and casual volunteers. Without you, it wouldn't be possible to do this. I am so grateful to you always!
