Today, we farewelled a remarkable man, former President of the Australian Jieh Community Club and a lifelong servant of our community, Mr George Abdullah Azzi.
George's impact on the Jieh and Lebanese communities in Sydney will be remembered for generations. His leadership, generosity, and commitment to helping others changed many lives.
Back in 2022, the AJCC had the privilege of honouring George for his service and contributions. Below are the words I shared on that special evening.

Tonight, the Australian Jieh Community Club takes the opportunity to honour and express its appreciation to one of our own, former AJCC President, Mr George Abdullah Azzi.
George arrived in Australia in the late 1970s and established himself as a devoted family man. Together with his wife, Mariam, they raised five children — Georgina, Lara, Abdulla, Des, and Christian — and are now proud grandparents to six grandchildren.
During the 1980s, Lebanon endured some of its darkest years. Our village of Jieh was profoundly affected by the war. Families were repeatedly displaced, many lives were lost, and our community suffered greatly. One of the most painful moments in our village's history was the invasion and destruction of Jieh on 28 April 1985.
Throughout these challenging times, George served as President of the AJCC. He was instrumental in coordinating support for families from Jieh, helping those in need and organising sponsorships that enabled many to begin new lives in Australia.
My family and I are among those who benefited from George's generosity and leadership. We were fortunate to have George as our visa sponsor, helping us relocate to this beautiful country and providing us with opportunities that have shaped our lives.
In speaking with Auntie Mariam, I learned that their home was often filled with members of our community, gathering to discuss how best to support families back home. These efforts were undertaken entirely on a voluntary basis, motivated by George's love for Jieh and his unwavering commitment to our people.
George, on behalf of the Australian Jieh Community Club, thank you for your leadership, your achievements, and your invaluable contributions to the Jieh and Lebanese communities in Sydney.
Your service has left a lasting legacy, and we are proud to honour you.
