πŸ“Œ The APF, together with the Pacific Community-SPC has opened the Pacific NHRI Advancement Workshop in Nadi, Fiji today.

🌏 The three-day workshop brings together government representatives from across the Pacific to support countries at critical stages of establishing or strengthening their National Human Rights Institutions.

🧩 Sessions will cover legislative design, Paris Principles compliance, GANHRI (Global Alliance Of National Human Rights Institutions) accreditation, and the development of national roadmaps tailored to each country's context.

πŸ“ The workshop reflects the ongoing regional commitment to building independent, accountable human rights institutions across the Pacific and the important role peer learning and regional cooperation play in that process.

Today we commenced the APF Annual Programme on GANHRI Accreditation 2026 with opening remarks from Dr Audrey Anne Rochelemagne, Deputy Head of Cooperation Section at the European Union Delegation, Miss Pornprapai Ganjanarintr, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand, and Ms Thuy Doan-Smith, Executive Director of the APF.

πŸ“Œ APF and GANHRI were pleased to convene colleagues from EU Delegations across the Asia Pacific this week for a practical exchange on strengthening cooperation with National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs).

🌏 We discussed what works in practice: engaging NHRIs routinely, protecting independence when it is under pressure, supporting multilateral engagement, and creating more opportunities for peer exchange and visibility.

πŸ’‘ A clear takeaway: strong, independent NHRIs are essential partners for advancing human rights, democracy and rule of law priorities.

πŸ“Œ APF stands ready to work alongside EU Delegations, bringing regional expertise to Paris Principles accreditation and follow-up on SCA recommendations.

Day 1 opened in Nadi, Fiji with remarks from the President of the Court of Appeal of Fiji, Lordship Justice Isikeli Mataitoga, and welcome addresses by APF Chairperson Ms Samar Khaled al Haj Hassan and Human Rights Fiji Commissioner Ms Alefina Vuki.

Their input, alongside contributions from and UNDP Pacific Office in Fiji, grounded a timely conversation in a challenging global human rights moment: defend NHRI independence, promote human rights, speak clearly to rule of law and UN mechanisms, build joint advocacy with partners and donors, and form new alliances to protect rights and accountability.
