Celebrating One of Our Own: Sashi Perera Takes the Stage!

From her sharp wit to her fearless storytelling, she continues to represent our community with authenticity, humour, and heart. “Pear Tree” dives into the beautifully messy, hilarious, and heartfelt moments that shape life between Sri Lanka and Australia—family, identity, love, and everything in between.
As a network committed to uplifting Sri Lankan‑Australian women, we are thrilled to celebrate Sashi’s success and encourage our community to support her journey.

Sashi’s surname - Perera - means pear tree in Portuguese. You won’t believe how mad Portugal gets if you mention why it’s a super common name in Sri Lanka hehe.

Our second event for IWD2024 was hosted in partnership with with Immigrant Women's Speak Out, Seva International and Boronia Multicultural Services. All three agencies are well known in the community for their amazing work with supporting women who are from multicultural backgrounds.

We were joined by some influential women including the Federal MP for Reid - Sally Sitou, the Director of NSW Multicultural Heath - Lisa Woodland and the CEO of Kingsgrove Sports - Rohini Solomons. It was truly incredible to hear from them all about the importance of representation and equal participation in the ecomony for women and girls everywhere.

We're throwing it back to the first event team SLAWN participated in for IWD2024. Our executive committee member Dilini spoke with students from John Edmonson High School about all things empowerment, equality and the importance of education. She spoke about how these areas shaped her own story and how her passion for protecting the rights and safety of those subjected to violence began when she was in school. The students also shared their hopes and dreams for their futures and this was truly inspiring.
