🦆 Mother Duck & Ducklings Rescued from a Swimming Pool 💚

Another rewarding wildlife rescue today!
This beautiful mother duck and her little ducklings became trapped in a backyard swimming pool and were unable to safely get themselves out.

I was able to safely rescue the family, keep mum and her babies together, and release them back into a suitable natural area where they could continue on their way. 🦆🐥🐥🐥

Swimming pools can become dangerous traps for young ducklings because they may not be strong enough to climb over the high, slippery edges.

If you find ducklings trapped in your pool, keep dogs and cats away, avoid separating them from their mother, and provide a temporary ramp or board so they can climb out. If they're unable to leave safely, contact a wildlife rescuer for assistance.

🐍💚 Common Green Tree Snake Rescue & Release – Quakers Hill 💚🐍

Last night at around 10:30pm, I was called out to Quakers Hill to rescue this beautiful Common Green Tree Snake (Dendrelaphis punctulatus).

What a stunning snake! 🌿💛 With its beautiful green-blue colouring and bright yellow underside, this species is always amazing to see.

Common Green Tree Snakes are non-venomous and generally harmless to people. They are fast, alert climbers and an important part of our local ecosystem.

After being safely rescued last night, he was released back into suitable habitat today, where he belongs. 🐍🌳💚

If you come across a snake, please keep your distance, keep children and pets away, and contact an appropriately licensed professional snake catcher rather than attempting to catch or handle it yourself.

🎙️Talking Bird Flu (H5N1) on Pick 'n Mix with Anne & Julie – Alive 90.5 FM 🐦

It was a pleasure joining Anne on Pick and Mix at Alive 90.5FM yesterday from 3–4pm to discuss Bird Flu, particularly H5N1 Avian Influenza, and raise awareness about what it means for our wildlife, poultry, pets and the wider community.

During the segment, we spoke about how bird flu spreads, the signs people should look out for, and most importantly, what to do if you come across sick or dead birds.

🐦 Remember these three important words:

🚫 AVOID – Keep your distance. Do not touch sick or dead birds, their feathers, droppings, eggs or the surrounding contaminated area. Keep pets away as well.

📱 RECORD – From a safe distance, record the location, time and date, if possible, take photos or video.

☎️ REPORT – Report multiple sick or dead birds or other animals to the 24-hour Emergency Animal Disease Hotline: 1800 675 888.

⚠️ PUBLIC SAFETY DISCLAIMER

The current risk of H5N1 bird flu to people in Australia is considered low, but infection can occur through close contact with infected birds, animals or contaminated environments.

Members of the public should not attempt to handle, rescue, move or dispose of a sick or dead bird themselves. Leave handling to appropriately trained and authorised personnel.

If you have had direct contact with a sick or dead bird and later become unwell, seek medical advice and tell your healthcare provider about the exposure.

Early reporting and sensible precautions can help protect our wildlife, domestic animals and community.

🐍 SNAKE SEASON IS HERE – STAY AWARE, NOT AFRAID! 🐍

As the weather starts warming up, snakes across Sydney and NSW are becoming more active.

After spending the cooler months less active, snakes will begin moving around looking for warmth, food, water and eventually mates. This means we may start seeing them in backyards, gardens, sheds, garages, around pools and sometimes close to our homes.

⚠️ If you see a snake:
• Stay calm and keep your distance
• Bring children and pets inside
• Never attempt to catch, kill or corner it
• Keep an eye on its location from a safe distance
• Contact a licensed snake catcher or wildlife rescuer

Remember — snakes don't want to chase or attack us. Most would rather escape if given the opportunity.

🌿 Snakes are an important part of our Australian ecosystem, helping control rodents and maintaining the natural balance of our environment.

This snake season, let's replace fear with awareness, respect and education.

🐍 A great opportunity to share, educate and connect with our industry.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of presenting at the AEPMA NSW Branch Industry Event at Rosehill Bowling Club.

My presentation, “Wildlife Wise: Snake Awareness, Safety & First Aid,” focused on helping pest management professionals better understand snake awareness, safety and what to do when encountering snakes while working in the field.

Working in pest management means we often enter roof voids, subfloors, gardens, sheds and other environments where an unexpected encounter with a snake can happen. My key message was simple:

Knowledge, preparation and respect for wildlife can make these encounters safer for everyone — including the snake. 🐍

I shared some of my real-life experiences as The Wildlife Guy, including snake encounters around homes and pest-management equipment, what to do when a snake is discovered, the importance of professional snake handling, and potentially life-saving snake bite first aid.

It was also fantastic to see pest control companies, suppliers and industry professionals coming together under one roof. These events provide a great opportunity to learn from one another, reconnect with familiar faces, build new relationships and strengthen our industry.

A huge thank you to AEPMA NSW for the invitation and the opportunity to present, and thank you to everyone who attended, participated and came up for a chat afterwards.

It was a privilege to share some of my knowledge and experiences from the field with our industry.

This afternoon, I had the privilege of joining Anne & Julie on the Pick 'n' Mix Talk Show at Alive 90.5FM to engage with the local community about one of my greatest passions—Australian wildlife conservation.

Community engagement is at the heart of conservation. Every opportunity to educate the public helps replace fear with understanding, foster respect for our native wildlife, and empower people to respond safely when they encounter animals such as snakes.

A heartfelt thank you to Anne & Julie and the entire team at Alive 90.5FM for the warm welcome and for providing such an important platform to connect with the community. It was a pleasure sharing practical wildlife safety tips, rescue stories, and the importance of protecting Australia's unique biodiversity.

Education creates awareness. Awareness inspires action. Together, we can build a safer future for both people and our native wildlife - Australia 🇦🇺.

❄️ July Winter Food, Water & Blanket Drive – Sydney C*D ❄️

11°C, rain, and freezing conditions across Sydney tonight.

While many of us were heading home to a warm bed, others were preparing to sleep on the streets.
Tonight, we delivered food, water & blankets, and most importantly, compassion. It was a powerful reminder that homelessness can affect anyone and that a small act of kindness can make a big difference.

Be grateful for what you have, and if you can, help someone in need. ❤️🙏

🐾 Possum vs Rat – Why Identification Matters 🐾

Interesting call-out today that highlights why proper identification is so important.

The customer was convinced they had a rat problem after hearing noises around the property. However, after a thorough inspection, we discovered the culprit was actually a beautiful Common Ringtail Possum. 🐾

It's easy to mistake wildlife activity for a pest issue, especially when noises are coming from roof voids, garages, or storage areas. That's why proper identification is critical before any action is taken.

Not every scratching noise is a rat, and not every animal found around a home is a pest. In this case, the visitor was one of our native protected species, requiring a completely different approach.

As both a wildlife conservationist and pest management professional, I always believe in identifying the animal first, understanding the situation, and then choosing the most appropriate solution.

🐾 The right identification protects wildlife.🐾 The right identification saves customers time and money.🐾 The right identification leads to the right outcome.

Respect all life. Every creature has a role to play in our environment.

Today I had the opportunity to deliver a presentation during the Sydney Wildlife Rescue and Care Course, highlighting the care and rescue of reptiles, particularly forcusing on lizards and turtles.

I joined Sydney Wildlife as a volunteer 11 years ago with a passion for helping native wildlife and a desire to learn more about rescue and rehabilitation. Looking back, it has been one of the most rewarding journeys of my life.

Sydney Wildlife is much more than a wildlife rescue organisation—it is a community of dedicated volunteers committed to rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing Australia's native wildlife while educating the public about conservation.

Over the past 11 years, I have learned so much, met incredible people, and been given countless opportunities to make a difference for wildlife. The knowledge, mentorship, friendships, and experiences gained through Sydney Wildlife have helped shape the person I am today.

A heartfelt thank you to Sydney Wildlife and every volunteer who selflessly gives their time to help animals in need. I am truly grateful to be part of such an amazing organisation.

🐍 Golden-crowned (Cacophis squamulosus) Snake safely released back into its natural habitat.

Snakes are active throughout the seasons in Australia. During colder months, many enter brumation, a period of reduced activity where they conserve energy and seek shelter. On warmer winter days, they may still emerge to bask, hunt, or move between habitats.

Respect wildlife, give snakes space, and appreciate the important role they play in our environment. 🇦🇺🌿
