Elizabeth didn’t sign up for City2Surf just for the challenge - she did it for her sister, Lucy💞

In 2021, Lucy was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Sadly, by 2023, it had spread to her brain. Through it all, Elizabeth holds onto the moments that mattered most - long walks together, even through the biting UK winter, making the most of every day they had together.

Running became more than just a race. It became a way to honour Lucy and support research that could change the future for women facing the same diagnosis.

Her story quickly connected with others - people who had faced breast cancer firsthand or loved someone who had, all rallying behind her and her reason for taking on the 14km journey from Hyde Park to Bondi Beach.

Meet Tina - a two time breast cancer survivor, diagnosed 13 years apart and living proof of why research matters.

For Tina, breast cancer research isn’t just important - it’s personal. She believes research is the key to better diagnosis, treatment and outcomes for people facing breast cancer today and in the future. That’s why she has chosen to leave a gift in her Will to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Tina’s legacy gift is about hope. It’s about ensuring research continues and moves us closer to Zero Deaths from breast cancer.

Leaving a gift in your Will is a deeply personal decision. If you’d like to have a confidential conversation, our team is here to help.

The House Of Wellness hosts, Melissa Doyle and Shane Crawford are joined by pro-athlete Dominic Di Tommaso and National Breast Cancer Foundation CEO, Dr Cleola Anderiesz to unpack a health issue often hidden in plain sight: inherited cancer risk.

Known for pushing physical limits as a freerunner and parkour athlete, Dom shares how a strong family history of cancer led him to discover he carries the breast cancer (BRCA) gene mutation. Alongside Dom’s powerful personal story, Dr Anderiesz breaks down the realities of inherited gene mutations that are linked to breast cancer.

Research offers hope for families like Dom’s where genetic markers shape difficult decisions and transforms awareness into action. His advocacy shows that awareness is not just knowledge, it’s the power to help change lives.

✨With the first episode of KYLIE now airing, her story is a powerful reminder that breast cancer can affect women at any age.

In Australia:
- Around 1,000 women under 40 are diagnosed each year – that’s 3 every day.
- Around 1 in 3 breast cancers recur after initial treatment

That’s why funding research into breast cancer is so important. NBCF-funded researcher Associate Professor Christine Chaffer from the Garvan Institute of Medical Research is leading a research program called ‘AllClear.’ AllClear is focused on stopping breast cancer recurrence – helping those people who wonder everyday if their cancer will return.

Together, let’s make Zero Deaths from breast cancer possible. 💕

“I was 39 and perfectly healthy when I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer.”

Rebecca first noticed stretch marks on her breast and assumed she might be pregnant. But after scans, biopsies and urgent referrals, she was told she had Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC).

But then came the news no one is prepared for – Rebecca's PET scan revealed she had stage 4 (IV) breast cancer and the cancer was now inoperable.

Being told she needed a mastectomy was devastating. Being told she was inoperable was even harder.

Today, Rebecca lives life in three month cycles – scan, wait, hope and then repeat.

Rebecca's story is a powerful reminder of why research into metastatic breast cancer is so important. Together, we can make Zero Deaths from breast cancer possible 💗
