Are your sustainability claims backed by biodiversity data? 📊🍃

Sustainability reporting has come a long way, carbon emissions, energy efficiency, and waste reduction are standard inclusions. But amid the buzzwords and beautifully designed reports, one critical question is often overlooked…

🦧 Where is the biodiversity data?

Many companies make broad declarations such as…

“We’re reducing our environmental footprint”
“We protect nature”
"We are implementing responsible sourcing practices"

But do they understand their true impact on biodiversity? Broad claims without scientific substance put companies at risk of greenwashing.

Sustainability reports without biodiversity metrics fail to provide a complete picture of environmental impact.

New Feature Alert: BII Change 🚨

We’re excited to introduce our newest feature Biodiversity Intactness Index (BII) Change. This new feature helps you visualise where human activity and other pressures could affect biodiversity over time.

The BII suggests how healthy nature is in a place by estimating the impact of human activity, compared to a baseline where humans have no impact. It’s a score between 0 and 1, closer to 1 means nature is likely doing well, and closer to 0 means a lot has been lost.

The feature allows users to quickly see if impacts on nature have changed on and around their project sites over time. Helping them prioritise areas for action, report impact credibly, and track improvements as they implement biodiversity strategies.

The BII is built on cutting-edge remote sensing, land use classification, and ecological modelling that draws on global datasets.

Now live for individual projects under the ‘Local Biodiversity’ tab, BII Change brings new layers of insight into your ecosystem footprint, enabling you to:

🧭 Navigate biodiversity risk with confidence

⚠️ Use BII as an early warning system

📊 Give more detail in your nature-related disclosures

🌍 Make better land use decisions

Nature-positive planning starts with understanding the pressures, and BII Change brings clarity, urgency, and opportunity into one place.

New Feature Alert: Habitat Change 🚨

Our new Habitat Change feature empowers you to:

🔍 Retrospect and Quantify
Gain a clear understanding of your existing assets' baseline and quantify habitat loss over time. This isn't just about looking back, it's about understanding the pace of change to inform more accurate nature-positive solutions. See the full story of ecosystems, from well before your project started, right through to today.

📈 Track Regeneration
Witness the positive impact of your restoration efforts as Habitat Change tracks regeneration and its influence on the habitat over time.

Gain actionable insights with three powerful functions within Habitat Change:

🌴 Natural Habitat
Understand your overall natural habitat footprint, crucial for project baselining and addressing the ‘interface with nature’ within the TNFD framework. Make smarter land-use decisions by identifying areas for avoidance, mitigation, or, where unavoidable, offsetting. Plus, effortlessly monitor the gains from your restoration projects for impactful reporting.

🪵 Most Changed Natural Habitat
Prioritise your risk management by pinpointing the habitat types experiencing the most significant changes. This acts as an early warning system for planning and regulatory compliance, helping you understand tradeoffs and focus your restoration efforts where they're needed most.

🌆 Built Up & Urban Areas
Conduct in-depth land take analysis, tracking the conversion between greenfield and brownfield sites. Assess the sustainability of growth patterns, plan for avoidance and offsetting, and support the integration of green infrastructure in urban areas. This insight is invaluable for baselining ESG-aligned design standards and communicating your urbanisation impact to councils, investors, and the community.

Habitat Change is part of our wider commitment to providing you with the tools you need to drive meaningful environmental outcomes. We're excited to support you in leveraging this powerful new capability.

Where do Australia's leaders stand on the environment? 🌿

As the 2025 federal election approaches, Australians have a critical opportunity to shape the country’s environmental future.

At Xylo Systems, informed decisions are at the heart of our business, especially when it comes to biodiversity and the climate. So we’ve compiled a 2025 election snapshot looking at each major party leader has voted on key environmental issues.

🔵 Coalition leadership could lead to reduced federal oversight, prioritisation of extractive industries, and weakened biodiversity protections, putting vulnerable ecosystems under further stress.

🔴 Labor continues a centrist approach, investing in climate initiatives while avoiding more aggressive targets like net zero by 2035, risking slower biodiversity recovery in the face of urgent threats.

🟢 Greens advocate for the most rounded environmental agenda, accelerating climate action, halting new fossil projects, and reinforcing protections for ecosystems and endangered species.

As voters, we hold the power to choose a legacy. Let's use it wisely, for Australian landscapes, waters, and all the species who call them home.

What does nature-positive actually mean? 🤔🍃

Nature-positive means not just reducing harm, but actively restoring ecosystems. The UN has set a bold target: halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030. And forward-thinking businesses are already making it happen:

🏙️ City Developments Limited is integrating biodiversity into real estate, using TNFD aligned reporting, investing in blue carbon credits, and creating nature-focused community projects.

💼 Kering is regenerating 1M hectares of farmland, ensuring deforestation-free supply chains, and leading The Fashion Pact with 250+ brands.

🏗️ Holcim is driving nature-positive construction, restoring quarries into wildlife corridors, and leveraging science-based biodiversity assessments.

A nature-positive approach isn’t just an environmental commitment, it’s a business strategy. Investors, regulators, and consumers are demanding action, and businesses that integrate biodiversity now will lead the future.

Xylo Systems becomes the first Australian nature tech company committed to the TNFD 🐨🍃

We’re rooted in our passion for biodiversity. As the first nature tech company in Australia to adopt the TNFD, this move reinforces our commitment to nature but also sets a new standard for transparency, accountability, and actionable insights in nature reporting across the industry.

It also aligns with many of our clients that have already adopted the TNFD, and use the Xylo Systems platform as part of their TNFD reporting.

But ultimately, our commitment to the TNFD reflects our vision of a nature-positive future.

Why is the TNFD important? 🤔

🌱 The TNFD Framework provides a globally recognised structure for businesses to understand, assess, and disclose their nature-related risks and dependencies. Think of it as the biodiversity counterpart to climate reporting.

🌏 Healthy ecosystems fuel industries by providing essentials like water, fertile soil, and climate regulation. But degradation poses serious risks, from supply chain disruptions to financial losses.

🤝 Our platform empowers companies to take actionable steps toward a nature-positive future. With biodiversity assessments ready in just 30 minutes, and compliant with TNFD reporting, we provide the insights needed to protect ecosystems and drive operational resilience.

This isn’t just a win for us, it’s a step forward for every business ready to embrace sustainability and accountability.
