Everyone has a past, but don't let it determine their future.

The easiest thing to do in this world is to find a fault in others. No matter how good a person is, for someone who dislikes them, a fault will always be found.

Not everyone has a great start in life or starts off on the right path due to circumstances or previous karma. Their behaviour may not be up to social norms or acceptable sometimes. This, however, doesn't mean that people will always remain the same way. Just because a person is evil now and isn't of good character, it doesn't mean they won't be a great personality in the future.

In the Valmiki Ramayan, we find the story of Maharishi Valmiki who was originally a thief, but due to the positive association of Devrishi Narad and chanting Shri Ram's name, he became the great Guru of Shri Ram's sons.

Even Lord Krishna Himself was very mischievous when He was young. There was hardly anyone in Vrindavan who hadn't fallen for one of His pranks. Despite this, Lord Krishna became the Great King of Dwarka and killed many demons for the benefit of mankind.

In the Navdha Bhakti (9-commandments of bhakti) of the Ramcharitamanas, Shri Ram told #8 as "...Sapnehu nahi dekheu pardosha" - 'even in your dreams you shouldn't look at the fault of others'.

"Vidyā-vinaya-sampanne brāhmaṇe gavi hastini, śhuni chaiva śhva-pāke cha paṇḍitāḥ sama-darśhinaḥ" - 'The humble sage, by virtue of true knowledge, sees with equal vision a learned and gentle brahmana, a cow, an elephant, a dog and a dog-eater [outcaste]' (BG-5.18).

Swami Sivananda reinforces this teaching of Shri Krishna that with true knowledge, we will see everyone as equal; we will see everyone the same as us. And when someone else has a fault in them, then so do we within us. Hence, let go of fault finding in others and look at the faults of the self to improve and rectify.

A good person will see good in all, so let us all practice finding the good in every person and in every circumstance.

"It is the ego which has created the idea of separateness from God or atman (soul)" - Swami Sivananda.

What is ego? In the Oxford dictionary it is defined as a person's sense of self-esteem or self-importance, but it's actual essence extends far beyond that. While we are taught to live with "atmah-sammaan" (self-respect), too much of anything is bad and can start having it's negative effects on the individual.

Ego is one of the vikaar's (bad habits) that can lead to a spiritual aspirants downfall. It is a perspective or attitude of the self having higher importance, worth, capabilities and being better then those around.

Ego destroys the gyan (knowledge) and fills the aspirant with the ignorance "I am this body, I am the senses". Thus, thinking that the body, it's pleasures, achievements and successes are what is real, this distracts the yogi from seeking spiritual enlightenment and strays him from the path. In the Bhagavad Gita there is reference to this ego as a false identity that we have created as being the most significant and most important all the time.

"The aggressive, self-assertive rajasic ego is your enemy" - Swami Sivananda.

This harmful ego has to be destroyed at all costs. While it is good to meet and exceed goals, one should not be attached to it. Know that what you have achieved is not just from hard work and dedication, but from your previous good karma, the blessing of elders and Guru's, and by the grace of the Supreme.

"To remove the ego is the prime purpose of all yoga" - Swami Sivananda.

An easy way to practice letting go of ego is to dedicate all your karma, achievements and wins to the Lord. "By dedicating all your works to Me (Shri Krishna), you will be freed from the bo***ge of good and bad results..." - (BG-9.28).

Know that you are not this temporary body but the eternal and immortal soul and work diligently to remove ego and other vikaar's (bad habits) so that your may better yourself, gain divine knowledge, achieve spiritual enlightenment and attain the Supreme in this very lifetime.

"You must first develop Viveka or discrimination between the real and the unreal" - Swami Sivananda.

Viveka (discrimination) is a word that has a very negative connotation attached to it in today's society, however our spiritual principles and Swami Sivananda Himself encourage us to use viveka.

The natural question arises, on what should we use viveka on, on what should we discriminate? It is to discriminate between good and bad, right and wrong, what is real and not real, what is temporary and what is eternal etc.

Viveka is a powerful tool in the life of every spiritual aspirant whether a beginner or advanced practitioner. On this path, one must start deciding between which one is better for the aspirant for their upliftment and which will lead to their downfall. This applied not only to the spiritual practices but in the material world as well. Discriminating between procrastinating and studying could be the difference between a student being successful or not passing, as an example.

Hence, practice viveka in your everyday life to ensure that every act and karma done is in your best interest and keeps you moving further in your spiritual life.

Many have travelled far and wide to find peace, at the end only to realise that it was within them this whole time!

We often rely on material objects to give us a sense of satisfaction and peace. When we purchase something new or go to a certain place, it may give us a sense of happiness.

This happiness is short-lived however. If the mind is fickle and objects are temporary, so too the peace that it provides are temporary as well.

Being dissatisfied with their current situation, many have left their households in search of an inner sense of satisfaction. And at the end, they realise that it is not anything on the outside that gives you a sense of peace but on the inside.

Swami Sivananda emphasises the fact that if you cannot be satisfied and at peace with yourself on the inside, no amount of material pleasures will ever be able to make you happy.

Hence, look within yourself and recognise who you are: the eternal form of love and peace.
