Jannawi was established in 1978 to support children who have experienced trauma through violence, neglect, psychological or sexual assault as a result of family violence.

As we approach the end of the financial year, we’re asking our community to stand with us in supporting children and families who need it most.

At Jannawi Family Centre, our Kids Support Programs provide children with opportunities to heal, build confidence, strengthen relationships, and simply enjoy being children. From therapeutic group activities and school holiday experiences to practical assistance and community connection, these programs help create brighter futures.

While government funding supports many aspects of our work, it doesn’t cover everything. There are often gaps between what is funded and what children and families genuinely need.

🐧🧁 Penguin Cupcake Fun at Youth Zone! 🧁🐧

Our young people at Youth Zone had a wonderful time getting creative in the kitchen, decorating their very own penguin cupcakes! 💙✨

From spreading icing to adding the finishing touches, the activity was filled with laughter, teamwork, and plenty of imagination. Activities like these provide opportunities for children and young people to build confidence, develop fine motor skills, strengthen social connections, and simply enjoy being kids in a safe and supportive environment.

At Jannawi Family Centre, we believe that creating positive experiences through fun, engaging activities helps foster a sense of belonging, connection, and wellbeing.

Every child deserves a childhood. 💛

Today, on World Day Against Child Labour, we stand alongside communities across the world in recognising the rights of all children to be safe, supported, and free to learn, play and thrive.

Child labour often reflects broader experiences of vulnerability, poverty, violence and disadvantage. As adults, communities and service systems, we all have a role to play in creating environments where children are protected, nurtured and given every opportunity to reach their full potential.

At Jannawi, we remain committed to strengthening the safety and wellbeing of children and families through culturally responsive, trauma-informed support.

Because childhood should be filled with connection, curiosity and hope — not hardship.

💛 Every child deserves a safe and nurturing childhood.

The Australian Child Maltreatment Study reminds us that childhood experiences can have a profound impact across a person’s life. Behind every statistic is a child, a family, and an opportunity to make a difference.

The study found that:
▪️ More than half of Australians experienced at least one form of child maltreatment during childhood.
▪️ Exposure to domestic violence was the most commonly reported form of maltreatment.
▪️ Many children experienced multiple forms of harm.
▪️ Childhood maltreatment was strongly linked to poorer mental health outcomes in adulthood.
▪️ Experiences of maltreatment significantly increased the risk of self-harm and suicidality.

These findings highlight the importance of prevention, early intervention, trauma-informed practice, and communities that prioritise the safety and wellbeing of children.

For children who have experienced big stressors, traditional therapy through talking can sometimes feel overwhelming. That is where sensory play steps in.

Here is why slime is a therapeutic powerhouse:

This week is an opportunity to reflect on our shared history, honour culture and community, and commit to creating a future grounded in respect, connection, and equity for all.

Reconciliation is everyone’s responsibility — and meaningful change happens through everyday actions, relationships, and conversations.

Every child deserves the chance to belong 💛

At Jannawi, our Kids Support Programs help children and families experiencing financial hardship access opportunities many of us take for granted — sport, tutoring, music, creative activities, and school essentials.

For children like Mathew*, joining Judo meant more than learning a new skill. It meant friendship, confidence, inclusion, and feeling like every other child.

There’s something powerful about learning in a space that feels welcoming, practical and connected.

Our Cooking & English Group brings people together to share recipes, build confidence, practice everyday conversation and connect with community — all while preparing delicious meals together.

Learning English while cooking is a practical and engaging way to:
✨ Build confidence in speaking and listening
✨ Learn everyday words and phrases naturally
✨ Strengthen social connection and belonging
✨ Share culture, stories and traditions through food
✨ Develop skills in a relaxed and supportive environment

Because language learning is more than worksheets — it’s about connection, participation and feeling part of community. 💛

Mathew* just wanted to join Judo like his friends 💛

But after experiencing the impacts of domestic violence, life had already become more complicated than any child’s should be.

For Mathew and his mum, Sarah*, financial pressure meant opportunities like sport felt out of reach.

Thanks to the support of our community, Mathew was able to enrol in Judo and receive his own judogi.
Now he’s no longer watching from the sidelines.
He’s learning new skills, building confidence, making friends, and simply getting to be a child.

For children recovering from trauma, activities like Judo can provide:
✨ Structure and routine
✨ Positive role models
✨ Confidence and connection
✨ Emotional regulation
✨ A sense of belonging
