Jannawi was established in 1978 to support children who have experienced trauma through violence, neglect, psychological or sexual assault as a result of family violence.

These are not just statistics.

They are our mothers.
Our daughters.
Our sisters.
Our cousins.
Our friends.
OUR CHILDREN.

In over just 48 hours in September, three women and one child lost their lives to domestic and family violence.

And across Australia:
1 in 3 women have experienced physical violence since the age of 15.

1 in 5 women have experienced sexual violence since the age of 15.

Behind every statistic is a life. Women and children whose lives have been taken by violence. Women and children whose stories must not be forgotten.

On 25 November, we will gather in Martin Place for Unite Against Violence: No More Empty Shoes to honour and remember those whose lives have been taken and to stand together for a future where this is no longer accepted as inevitable.

How many more lives?
How many more empty shoes?

We cannot accept this as inevitable. We need change. We need action. We need an end to violence.

Stand with us. Stand against violence.

🌟 Little Learners is back for Term 4! 🌈📚

Big steps start with little learners!

We’re excited to welcome children and families back to Jannawi’s Little Learners School Readiness Program, commencing 20 October at Hampden Park Public School.

Designed for children aged 4–6 years, our 8-week program supports children as they prepare for their transition to school, helping them build confidence, independence and essential early learning skills.

Through fun, play-based activities, children explore early literacy, numeracy, communication and social skills, while parents and carers participate alongside them, learning practical ways to support their child’s development at home.

💜 Because getting ready for school is about more than learning ABCs and 123s. It’s about building confidence, making connections and feeling ready for the next big adventure!

We can’t wait to see what our Little Learners discover, create and achieve this term!

SAVE THE DATE

We’ve all heard the news stories. We’ve seen the stats. But these are not just stats. Behind every statistic is a woman. A mother. A daughter. A sister. A friend. A child.

Women and children whose lives have been taken by violence. Women and children whose stories must not be forgotten.

On 25 November, 51 frontline organisations will stand together in Martin Place for Unite Against Violence: No More Empty Shoes, to remember the women and children we have lost to domestic and family violence over the past 12 months, and to call for the changes needed to make things better for victim-survivors.

This is part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

A Journey Towards Safety and Change

Domestic and family violence is complex. Creating lasting change requires safety, accountability and ongoing support.

Recently we share the story of Ali and Faye and their journey with Jannawi.

Our priority was always the safety and wellbeing of Faye and her young child. Through specialist support, Faye strengthened boundaries and made decisions that prioritised safety for herself and her son.

For Ali, change could only begin with accountability. Through engaging with Jannawi, he has begun exploring his behaviour, understanding its impact and learning what it means to build healthy relationships and be a safe and responsible father.

Their journey is ongoing. Trust is not rebuilt quickly, and meaningful change is demonstrated through consistent actions over time.

At Jannawi, we work alongside families to help break cycles of violence and create safer futures for children and families.

A wonderful start to our Community of Practice! 💜

Last Thursday, we welcomed the first cohort of our Community of Practice for the CALD Domestic and Family Violence Workforce

Our first session brought together a diverse group of multicultural practitioners to connect, share experiences and begin exploring the complexities of working at the intersection of culture and domestic, family and sexual violence.

💜 The small but mighty group represented 8 organisations across the sector and brought together practitioners from 12 different cultural backgrounds.

This diversity of experience, culture and practice knowledge is exactly what we hoped the Community of Practice would bring together.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed so openly and generously to the conversations and reflections throughout the session. Your willingness to share knowledge, experiences and perspectives helped create a thoughtful and supportive space from our very first gathering.

We’re excited to continue the conversations, strengthen connections and learn together as the CoP grows.

We can’t wait to come together again in November and welcome those who weren’t able to join us for our first session.

🌸 Friendship Flower 🌸

Our Team recently had the pleasure of taking part in the Wiley Park Girls High School Wellbeing Expo, where we created something very special — a Friendship Flower! 🌼💜

Students were invited to contribute a colourful hand to the flower, sharing five qualities they value in a friend. From kindness and loyalty to trust, respect and having fun, each hand represented what makes a friendship meaningful.

Together, the hands created a beautiful reminder that strong friendships are built on connection, respect, kindness and looking out for one another.

A big thank you to everyone who contributed and helped make the Friendship Flower bloom! 🌸✨

💜 CHILDREN IN THE ROOM: PUTTING CHILD RIGHTS INTO PRACTICE

Recently our Centre Director, Biljana Milosevic, had the privilege of co-facilitating Children in the Room, a child rights event organised by Canterbury-Bankstown Council.

We were also fortunate to hear from Professor John Tobin from the University of Melbourne, who spoke passionately about the importance of using a Child Rights framework when supporting children and families.

The event encouraged local practitioners to think about what it really means to put children’s rights into practice:
💜 Listening to children’s voices and perspectives
💜 Involving children in decisions that affect them
💜 Providing meaningful choices
💜 Paying attention to what children are communicating
💜 Recognising children as rights-holders in their own right

For Jannawi, this is an important reminder that we need to move beyond talking about children’s rights to putting those rights into action.

It is also time to talk about physical punishment.
At Jannawi, we believe that physical harm should never be considered an acceptable form of discipline. Children deserve to grow up in environments where they are safe, respected and supported.

We encourage our community to learn more, join the campaign to end corporal punishment of children, and share the message.

Because every conversation matters — and conversations can lead to change. 💜

💜 EVERY CONVERSATION MATTERS: SHIFTING CONVERSATION TO ACTION

National Child Protection Week | 6–12 September

National Child Protection Week is an opportunity to reflect on how children are cared for, supported and protected across Australia.

This year’s theme, “Every Conversation Matters: Shifting Conversation to Action,” reminds us that child safety is about more than talking about protection — it’s about taking practical, everyday action to support children and families.

At Jannawi this is something we put into practice every day. For us, child protection can be found in the everyday moments:
💜 Asking a child, “How can we help?”
💜 Supporting children to develop social skills and confidence
💜 Explaining what an AVO means and how it can help keep them safe
💜 Giving children choices about activities or even what they would like for afternoon tea
💜 Listening to what children have to say and taking their views seriously

These moments matter.

Children have a right to be heard, have a voice and have choices about things that affect them.

We also believe children must be recognised and included in family and domestic violence services alongside their mothers or the parent who has experienced violence and harm.

Children are not simply witnesses to family violence. They are directly impacted by it. Their experiences, needs and perspectives matter and must be recognised.

This National Child Protection Week, let’s move from conversation to action.

Because sometimes, a simple question like “How can we help?” can be the beginning of making a child feel heard, supported and safe. 💜

This weekend we celebrate fathers, father figures and caregivers who help children feel
loved, safe, supported and connected.

With National Child Protection Week just around the corner, it’s a meaningful opportunity to recognise the important role that fathers and father figures can play in creating safe and nurturing environments where children can thrive.

From dads and grandfathers to uncles, brothers and other caring role models —
showing up with love, patience, respect and presence matters.

🗣️ Every Conversation Matters.

Listening to children, encouraging open and respectful conversations, and giving children opportunities to have their voices heard are all important ways we can help keep children safe.

This Father’s Day, we thank the father figures who walk alongside children with care, compassion and kindness. 💜
