As many as 28 millions or 53% of Indonesian workers have incomes below a decent living wage.

Many union members also lack the needed support, skills and the leadership capacity to push for change.

To support them, AktivAsia Indonesia and the National Confederation of Unions (KSN) launched a participatory workshop named the People’s Economy School (SEKAR).

SEKAR aims to foster an alternative economic model that benefits union members and contributes directly to future organising.

The workshop seeks to nurture closed-loop systems, ‘circular economy’ of the working class, by the working class and for the working class—through cooperatives and worker collectives across Indonesia.

When we witness climate disasters or environmental issues, we may feel compelled to take immediate action. But action requires a strategy—one that will help us achieve our goals.

Let’s familiarise ourselves with the relevant terms before we develop a campaign strategy.

From grassroots movements to global policy change, women across the world are driving solutions that protect communities and create a more sustainable future.

Research shows women are significantly more likely to take action on climate issues. It has been proven that investing in women’s leadership is investing in the planet itself.🌏

This year’s Green Novel Prize 2026 recognized six outstanding environmental leaders, all women and two of them are from Asia, reminding us that powerful climate action is already happening worldwide.

Because when equality grows, climate solutions grow with it. 💚

In West Kalimantan, Indonesia, twelve Indigenous people said no to a palm oil company.

Instead, they built a credit union. Named after their ancestors who defended their sovereignty and their forest, Credit Union Keling Kumang.

The credit union is owned by the people. Governed by the people. Benefitting the people.

From twelve members to 228,000. From one modest office to schools, farms and 40 hectares of legally recognized customary forest.

This is what a people-centered economy looks like. This is why AktivAsia Indonesia runs SEKAR, School of People-Centered Economy. For union members. For anyone ready to turn resistance into transformative change.

Because protest is necessary. But what comes after protest determines whether change lasts.

The land and nature are inseparable from humanity.

This is emphasized by Qaisra Shahraz, a Pakistani author, in her short story titled “The Zemindar’s Wife.”

Set in modern-day Pakistan, Qaisra depicts a feudal landlord—Zemindar—who seeks to acquire the villagers’ land for bauxite mining.

However, this plan is fiercely opposed by the landlady—Chaudharani—named Noor. She aims to prevent mining, which would destroy the environment and their culture.

Shahraz beautifully portrays a woman’s struggle against environmental destruction, even as she is constrained by the traditional social boundaries of feudal order.

She also highlights the villagers’ intelligence in understanding the landowner’s political intrigues and the importance of nature for them.

This story serves as a reflection of many communities across Asia today that are under pressure from extractive industries.

It also reminds us of the agency and strength of women, marginalised groups and frontline communities to protect nature.

All we need is to act together and build collective power to create sustainable change.

Facilitation is more than just leading meetings or running trainings.

It’s not about becoming the “expert” in the room, but growing together through the process. ✨

Our recent Katalis held during 4-7 May 2026 at PPLH Puntondo, Sulawesti Selatan (Indonesia), we wanted to explore facilitation as something engaging, creative and alive.

In this facilitation and Training of Trainers, we encourage a practice that is not boring or rigid, but grounded in participation, collaboration and movement-building toward more equal spaces.

In the end, at Katalis we are learning how to navigate dynamics, hold space and share collective knowledge.

Because good facilitation doesn’t just shape forums.

It can shape the way we organize to make a solid foundation for our movement. 🌱

Indigenous Peoples and frontline communities did not create the fossil fuel economy. Yet they bear its deepest harms: stolen lands, poisoned waters, erased knowledge, broken bodies.

Now the world rushes to implement solutions to the climate crisis. But, Indigenous People remind us that climate solutions need real participation.

They demand self-determination over their lands, territories, knowledge systems, sciences and governance.

Faster energy transition is not enough. What we need is a just energy transition.
