🌌 WHO ARE WE? SWAN REACH OBSERVATORY

We’re a regional astronomy experience bringing the night sky within reach from the heart of the River Murray International Dark Sky Reserve.

At the centre of the observatory is our PlaneWave CDK700 telescope. But SRO is about more than the equipment. It’s about gathering people under a truly dark sky, learning together and sharing that first moment when a distant nebula, star cluster, galaxy or the Moon comes into view.

If you have ever wanted to see the jewel of our solar system with your own eyes, this October is your moment. 🪐

On October 4th, Saturn is putting on a show. The planet reaches an astronomical milestone called Opposition. Earth will slide between Saturn and the Sun, bringing this spectacular ringed giant closer and brighter in our night sky.

Because it is opposite the Sun, it rises in the East right at sunset and climbs high into our eastern sky by the time our public sessions kick off at 9:00 PM.

When you look through the eyepiece of our premier research-grade PlaneWave CDK700 telescope, you won't just see a fuzzy yellow dot. You can clearly see the distinct ring system floating in deep space, along with its brightest moon, Titan!

A massive thank you to our incredible guests who joined us on Saturday night for NASA’s International Observe the Moon Night! 🚀 These are the official pictures taken live on the night through our telescope! 📸

Swan Reach Observatory was proudly registered on NASA’s global map, and together, we took part in an internationally synchronised space outreach initiative alongside space lovers across the planet. 🗺️🛰️

Our guests saw the moon through two different lenses of extreme magnification under the pristine, gold-tier dark skies of the River Murray International Dark Sky Reserve.

On the night, under a gorgeous 55% moon, the glittering pinpoint stars of 47 Tucanae and the spectacular Jewel Box cluster were a real highlight at the eyepiece! 💎✨

Through our premier research-grade PlaneWave CDK700 telescope, we watched the sunlight strike towering mountain peaks kilometres above the lunar plains, casting long, dramatic shadows in real time. Then, we pivoted our view to lock onto distant planetary giants, ancient star clusters, and deep-space nebulae where new star systems are actively being born. 🪐💫

It was an absolutely unforgettable night, and hearing those genuine "oohs," "aahs," and "WOWs" never gets old for our team!
