The State Significant Development (SSD) Application for a proposed sand mine, which sought to extract up to 1 million tonnes of friable sandstone per year for up to 30 years, in Sutton Forest, NSW, has been withdrawn by the planners. As raised by the community in Tenterfield who reside nearby a quartz quarry, which undertakes sandblasting, the Sutton Forest community is equally concerned about toxic dust exposure as there is no safe level.

Call to Action: We ask the community to submit an opposition to the proposed sand mine in Sutton Forest. The mine threatens the Great Western Wildlife Corridor, Sydney's water catchment, Indigenous sites, endangered flora and fauna species, and swamp ecosystems. There are also major risks, including air and dust pollution, traffic hazards, noise, vibration and light pollution, and community mental health and wellbeing. The application, amendment report, and accompanying documents are on exhibition from Tuesday 7 November 2023 until Monday 4 December 2023. Submissions close Monday 4 December.

Cadia Valley Operations has been fined $15,000 after dust from its mine near Orange blew across homes on 29 April. The EPA issued the fine on 4 August after it found the Cadia Gold Mine operator had failed to maintain appropriate levels of dust mitigation on its Tailings Storage Facilities.
