Sydney Dogs & Cats Home has officially begun operating from its new purpose-built home in Kurnell today, marking the end of a years-long journey to establish a permanent new shelter.

From today, September 21, the organisation’s core shelter services — including impounding, reclaims, adoptions and fostering — will operate from the new facility at 69–83 Sir Joseph Banks Drive.

The move comes in Sydney Dogs & Cats Home’s 80th year, having first started as a local pound within St George Animal Hospital in 1946.

For around 75 years, the organisation operated from Carlton, where generations of animals were reunited with their owners or found new homes. But with the leased site eventually earmarked for redevelopment, it was forced to relocate to temporary facilities while plans for a permanent home progressed.

That ultimately led to Kurnell.

The purpose-built facility includes 50 dog kennels, 50 cat enclosures, three exercise and training yards, a walking track, reclaim and adoption facilities, community spaces, a 31-space car park and room for future veterinary services.

For the Sutherland Shire, the move brings a major animal-welfare organisation permanently into the local area, giving residents closer access to adoption and fostering opportunities, volunteering, community programs and future events.

Sydney Dogs & Cats Home says the larger facility will allow it to care for thousands of animals each year while expanding adoptions, fostering and community outreach. It also plans to provide practical education and training opportunities for TAFE and university veterinary students.

The organisation’s veterinary team will remain at Strathfield South for the time being.

The NSW Government provided land and $12 million in cornerstone funding towards the Kurnell project, while Sydney Dogs & Cats Home has continued fundraising to complete its longer-term vision for the site. Its 2025 annual report said more than $15.7 million had been raised towards a $21.6 million target.

Members of the public are being asked to give the animals and staff time to settle in, with open days and other community events to be announced in the future.
