Sutherland Shire Reconciliation Sutherland Shire Reconciliation is a member organisation of Reconciliation NSW. If you would like to know more please email [email protected]

We are comprised of both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous people working together to advance Reconciliation in our community. We promote Reconciliation through advocacy, events, and projects that prioritise the needs of First Nations people living in the Sutherland Shire, and that acknowledge our true shared histories and First Nations People’s ancient knowledge and culture. We are looking for members to join us (mob and non mob) at our events and for our projects.

SUMMER RAINBOW SERPENT PICNIC

This Earth Mother and her cockatoo chicks were spotted at Burnum Burnum Reserve yesterday. These early birds will sing in celebration at next Sunday's Rainbow Serpent Picnic, joining them will be a cacophony of male cicadas flexing their ribs to attract female mates.

Providing a human chorus will be the brilliant Barayagal community choir.

Details of our free event and the lineup of cultural talent are in the link in the comments.

We can't wait to see you there.

Another week of NAIDOC celebrations comes to an end.

We hope you had a chance to recognise the culture, history and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We had great day at Gunamatta Park celebrating NAIDOC Week. Sutherland Shire Reconciliation was warmly received with many important connections made including with local educators and council representatives.

Visitors to the event had many questions about how to get involved with SSR which was thrilling for us. There is a lot of passion out there for reconciliation.

“My Cultural cup is full” were the words of one Aboriginal attendee, her words reflected the full to the brim joy of many.

Happy NAIDOC!

Today was a great way to start NAIDOC week, doing what we do best, promoting reconciliation.

Aunty Dolly is pictured here handing over NAIDOC posters for display in Hazelhurst Arts Centre, Gymea, to Sebastian, Director of the gallery.

They are standing in front of a beautiful artwork currently on display by Rhoda Tjitayi. Rhoda paints “her grandmother's story, the ancestral creation story Piltati Tjukurpa”.

And because reconciliation never rests, this was followed by a long conversation over a cuppa on local ways to advance healing and unity, contributing to reconciliation for our nation.

Happy NAIDOC everyone, enjoy the celebrations.

“CULTURE IS THE WINNER”

What a wonderful belated Reconciliation Week Picnic we enjoyed on Sunday. We always work to make reconciliation events relevant and real.

This celebratory day was proudly supported by Sutherland Shire Council. This is a great example of the positive impact when individuals and organisations work together for a common goal of reconciliation.

A big thank you for the valued contribution of all, including those who shared their culture, and those who have given their time and energy. Importantly thank you to everyone who came to be part of a community looking for connection and reconciliation.

We hope you enjoy the video that shows snippets of our day and of some of the wonderful performers including:

Djurawalingjang local dance group. Djurawalingjang means “We Grow Together”, thank you for planting seeds of growth in our community.

Torres Strait Islander dance group Mui Mui Cedar Gedlam who generously shared their culture through song, dance and dance workshop. All learning should be this full of joy.

In the words of Toby Cedar “Culture is the winner”.

Thank you again to everyone who attended, and to those who didn’t make it, we hope to see you next year.

ANNUAL RECONCILIATION PICNIC THIS SUNDAY 16TH JUNE, PARC MENAI.

We are really looking forward to seeing you this Sunday at Park Menai for our Annual Reconciliation Picnic.

It looks like we are going to have some great weather 🌤

Even though we had to postpone from our original date during Reconciliation Week, we know every day is a good day for reconciliation.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Hello!

We are fast approaching the end of Reconciliation Week. We hope you have had the chance to attend one of the many special events taking place across our region.

We were of course supposed to host our annual reconciliation picnic today, but the wet weather has meant we’ve rescheduled to Sunday the 16th of June.

Sutherland Shire Reconciliation representatives continued connecting and attended several excellent events including the very successful Gandangara Land Council Reconciliation Week celebration where we had a stall.

Guests were welcomed with a smoking ceremony and many yarns were shared. We had lots of new membership enquiries. It was a wonderful morning.

Thank you Gandangara Local Aboriginal Land Council for inviting us to participate in such a celebratory day.
