What does consent mean to you?

We asked women with intellectual disability this important question. Understanding consent is an important part of making choices, setting boundaries and staying safe.

So yes, you CAN ask that! 💜 🙌

Understanding your body and how it works is an important part of consent, both in health and in relationships. We have an Easy Read poster called My Body, which is for girls and women to learn more about the private parts of their body.

Everyone has the right to make decisions in their own lives. Communication is an important part of making that happen.

CID teamed up with speech pathologists from Aruma to run a hands-on workshop for families and supporters from culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

Through practical activities and demonstrations, families and supporters explored different ways to communicate with people with intellectual disability and support them to express their choices and make their own decisions.

Interpreters were also available to help families participate in the workshop.

It was a fantastic workshop, with lots of learning and sharing of ideas between families, supporters, Aruma's talented speech pathologists and CID staff.

Let's do what works!

Getting the right support shouldn't come down to luck.

But for people with intellectual disability in NSW, it can depend on where they live, what services are available and who they come into contact with.

That's why CID is launching a new campaign calling for:

✅ More specialist intellectual disability health teams
✅ More court diversion programs
✅ Strengthening supported decision making

We know what works. With the right support at the right time, people with intellectual disability can get better healthcare, avoid unnecessary contact with the justice system and have more say in decisions about their own lives.

Now it's time to make it happen.

Not sure what to expect from a virtual care appointment?

Virtual care lets you have a healthcare appointment by video or phone, without having to visit your health professional in person.

CID has worked with Charles Sturt University and Western NSW Local Health District to create a new video to help make virtual care better for people with intellectual disability and explain how it works.

We asked women with intellectual disability what matters to them.

From periods and contraception to screening and learning about their bodies, women with intellectual disability have lots to say about their sexual health.
