Health Equity Matters Health Equity Matters is the peak national organisation for Australia’s community HIV response.

On October 8 we celebrate the history, culture and diversity of the le***an women in our community.

Today is also a day to recognise the resilience of the le***an women all around the globe who continue to face challenges including discrimination. We stand with you today and every day.

September 23 is Celebrate Bis*xuality Day!

Also known as Bi+ Visibility Day and Bis*xual Pride Day, today is all about celebrating our bi+ friends, family and colleagues.

While today is a day of celebration for the bi+ community, it is also a reminder for us to challenge discrimination including biphobia and erasure.

This week at the Australasian HIV&AIDS Conference, Health Equity Matters highlighted the work we are leading and supporting across the Pacific.

The Global Session of the conference, co-facilitated with ASHM, focused on the collaboration between Australian organisations and our partners in Fiji and PNG to strengthen local HIV responses. It featured reflections from the recent Pacific HIV Symposium, as well as a fantastic discussion with our PNG and Fiji colleagues.

We were thrilled to support via a scholarship Rogena Pelei from Youth Lead Rise / Key Population Advocacy Consortium - KPAC PNG, to join and present at this session!

Our Pacific Program Lead, Jess also presented a poster that was co-authored with our colleagues at the Key Populations Advocacy Consortium in PNG.

The conference presented a great opportunity shine a spotlight on the evolving HIV situation in the Pacific, and the work being done with the support of the Australian Government.

It’s Bis*xual Awareness Week!

To celebrate this significant week for the bi+ community, Health Equity Matters is thrilled to announce the release of a Bi+ HIV and S*xual Health Framework.

Developed through research and community consultation, the framework aims to support organisations to better engage, include and respond to bi+ communities.

Grounded in lived experience, health equity and intersectionality, the framework addresses the impacts of biphobia, stigma and bis*xual erasure on health outcomes and service access.

It provides practical guidance to create safer, more inclusive and affirming services while strengthening visibility, representation and support for bi+ communities across Australia’s HIV, s*xual health and LGBTIQA+ sectors.

Health Equity Matters Principal Director, Australia Programs Dr James Gray discussing the release of the 2025 HIV notification data at the Australasian HIV&AIDS Conference.

The 2025 data shows both areas of success but points to where further sustained efforts are required to achieve Australia's goal of virtually eliminating HIV transmission and ensuring that all people with HIV live well, free from stigma and discrimination.

Dr Gray is alongside Dr Skye McGregor and Scientia Professor Andrew Grulich from the Kirby Institute, and NAPWHA President Scott Harlum.

The Australasian HIV&AIDS Conference is underway in Melbourne!

Hosted by ASHM, the conference brings together clinicians, researchers, policymakers and community representatives to focus on the ongoing response to HIV across Australia and the Indo-Pacific.

Health Equity Matters President Mark Orr AM spoke to the importance of community leadership at the opening plenary.

The end-of-project report from the Normalising Testing Pilot Project is now available!

This project explored the feasibility of clinician-initiated testing, where GPs included testing for HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C and syphilis in routine blood tests.

The findings of this pilot demonstrated that a clinician-initiated testing model is both feasible and acceptable within general practice.

This year’s theme is ‘Every Body’. This is a declaration that s*xual health, rights, justice and pleasure belong to every person, in every body, without exception.
