Welcome to This Is Oz, a community-based initiative that aims to make Australia a place where everyone belongs.
-----------------------------------------------------
What Is This Is Oz? Part public art project and part social justice campaign, This Is Oz is an Instagram gallery where participants can upload pictures or videos of themselves with messages that challenge homophobia and transphobia or
celebrate diversity and social inclusion.
-----------------------------------------------------
What’s the aim? This Is Oz aims to improve services and opportunities for le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) Australians by demonstrating public support for LGBTI rights as well as illustrating the impact that homophobia and transphobia has on our community.
-----------------------------------------------------
Who’s producing it? This Is Oz is an initiative of ACON, NSW’s leading HIV prevention, HIV support and LGBTI health organisation. This Is Oz is being supported by Evo Media which publishes a range of LGBTI magazines and websites across Australia including print titles SX (NSW), MCV (VIC), Queensland Pride and Blaze (SA), and websites Gay News Network and SameSame.
-----------------------------------------------------
Why now? LGBTI Australians are currently under attack over a range of issues including marriage equality and school-based anti-bullying programs, and the hateful nature of some of these attacks is impacting on the health and wellbeing of LGBTI people. To combat this, we felt it was important for members and supporters of the LGBTI community to have a platform to speak up for an inclusive Australia.
-----------------------------------------------------
Haven’t I seen This Is Oz before? The original version of This Is Oz ran from 2009 to 2013 and was hugely successful, generating over 3000 submissions, attracting hundreds of thousands of website visitors and millions of TV viewers (thanks to a partnership with Network 10), and getting the backing of many high profile Australian people and organisations including Wallaby captain David Pocock, Gold Logie winner Carrie Bickmore, Footy Show host Paul ‘Fatty’ Vautin, singer Marcia Hines, actress and DJ Ruby Rose, and comedians Dave Hughes and Charlie Pickering.
-----------------------------------------------------
What’s new? With the reboot of This Is Oz, we’re taking full advantage of the latest features of contemporary social media to promote the initiative and get people involved. We’re now on Instagram and using lots of great new features on Facebook and Twitter which allow people to connect, share and inspire each other much more effectively.
