Bobby Goldsmith Foundation

Bobby Goldsmith Foundation Est. 1984 | HIV & disability support | NDIS-accredited | Helping people to thrive Bobby Goldsmith Foundation (BGF) is Australia’s longest-running HIV charity.

Founded in 1984, BGF undertakes a range of support and interventions that address key determinants of poor health outcomes for people living with HIV (PLHIV) – ie long-term social and economic poverty. BGF provides direct financial and practical assistance, emotional support, financial counselling, housing, study and employment support to the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people living with HI

V in New South Wales. From January 2016, BGF will extend financial assistance for health related issues to PLHIV on low incomes in South Australia. Working holistically with clients to limit the challenging circumstances that are often detrimental to physical and emotional wellbeing: BGF has provided care and support to thousands of PLHIV and operate a range of programs and services to address issues of social isolation, stigma, medication adherence and positive healthy living.

At BGF, we stand beside people facing some of life’s toughest circumstances.

People like Anthony, a proud 34-year-old Indigenous man from the Bundjalung region of the Northern Rivers, NSW, who is living with HIV.

When Anthony was diagnosed in 2019, it came as a shock. Aside from sudden and unexplained weight loss, he had no idea anything was wrong.

“I could either let it drag me down or face it head on,” he says.

Just one week after his diagnosis, Anthony was connected with John, a Case Manager from BGF. With support from BGF, Anthony was able to secure safe and stable accommodation — something he had never truly experienced before.

“For the first time in my life, I feel stable. I haven’t let having HIV stop me in any way."

Stories like Anthony’s are only possible because of compassionate supporters like you. Your generosity helps people living with HIV access safe housing, healthcare, practical support and hope for the future, when they need it most.

By donating today, you will help BGF deliver urgent assistance, practical care and ongoing support to those who need it most.

At the heart of BGF’s work is a commitment to high-quality, person-centred support for people living with HIV. This is made possible through our enduring partnership with NSW Health, whose funding underpins the delivery of our core services across NSW.

Today, NSW Health continues their commitment to ending HIV transmission with the launch of the NSW HIV Strategy 2026–2030.

The Strategy builds on strong progress in HIV prevention, testing and treatment across the state, while strengthening the focus on equity and access for communities that have not benefited equally.

Developed in partnership with community organisations, clinicians, researchers and people most affected by HIV, the Strategy sets out a coordinated, evidence‑based approach to further reduce transmission and support people living with HIV to live long, healthy lives.

We are pleased to work alongside NSW Health to deliver meaningful outcomes for the needs of our communities.

Today is National Sorry Day, a day to remember and acknowledge the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families and communities, which we now know as ‘The Stolen Generations’.

This year's theme is From Sorry to Action. As Healing Foundation states, acknowledging past harm is important, but acting to address it is critical. Sorry signals compassion, action delivers justice.

We encourage you to mark National Sorry Day on 26 May, and to stand with us to ensure that today and every day is step towards reconciliation, to an ongoing commitment to truth-telling and to healing.

This National Volunteer Week, we’re recognising the incredible people who give their time, energy and care to support our BGF community.

Our volunteers play an important role in creating connection, reducing isolation and helping people feel supported in ways that really matter.

Their contribution is felt every day through small moments, shared experiences and a genuine commitment to community.

To all of our volunteers, thank you. We’re grateful for everything you bring to BGF.

Have you visited Bobby Goldsmith's Blue Plaque?

Located on Oxford Street, the plaque marks the site of the first fundraiser held in support of Bobby. This moment sparked a community response and ultimately, the beginning of BGF.

It’s a quiet, powerful reminder of where we started and of the friends, community and care that shaped everything we do today.

If you’re nearby, take a moment to visit, reflect and remember. You can find Bobby's plaque at Universal Sydney - 85-93 Oxford Street, Darlinghurst.

Meet BGF Volunteer, Kim.

When Kim arrived in Australia from Vietnam in 2023, he brought with him more than a decade of experience supporting people living with HIV and vulnerable communities across South-East Asia.

Now volunteering as a case worker with BGF, Kim is helping clients facing housing insecurity, financial hardship and health challenges, while continuing to grow his skills and build a future in social work.

“Every client is respected and listened to,” Kim says.

For Kim, being part of BGF is more than a professional milestone. It’s a place where he knows he belongs. A place where he can grow into the social worker he aspires to be, while making a real difference in people’s lives.

And it’s supporters like you who make that possible.

Your tax-deductible donation can make a real and lasting impact.

With your support, we can continue expanding our services and providing urgent assistance to people who need it most.

Donate before 30 June to make a difference this financial year.

Today is IDAHOBIT, a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come and the work still to do.

At Bobby Goldsmith Foundation, we work alongside people every day who continue to navigate stigma, barriers and discrimination - not just because of HIV, but across different parts of their lives and identity.

What we’re reminded of, time and again, is how powerful it is when people feel safe, supported and able to show up as themselves.

That’s something we all have a role in creating.

Today is about standing together, but also about listening, learning and making sure no one feels left out or left behind.

If you’d like to read more about why this day matters to us, you can read our reflections here: https://www.bgf.org.au/we-stand-up-against-discrimination-in-all-its-forms-this-idahobit-day/
