Sydney, you've done it again! The Redkite Corporate Quiz was filled with fun, generosity and friendly competition, but ultimately about something much bigger – standing alongside children with cancer and their families.

Together we raised a record-breaking $718,467! Behind that number is real, tangible support for families, from essential bills and travel to treatment, to counselling through the emotional toll of childhood cancer.

“Cancer takes over and it becomes your life. Everything just stopped and because my husband and I couldn’t work, the kids lose out, everything in their life changed. When you’re not working and there’s no money coming in, everything becomes stressful.’’ 💬

As part of National Carers Week, we are sharing the stories of those impacted by childhood cancer and the long-term effects. When three-year-old Archie was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia at the height of lockdown the impact on his family was huge. Parents Stephanie and Ryan had to give up their jobs and juggle life with their other young children Hugo and Theo. While they were out of work Redkite covered bills, provided food and fuel vouchers.

“You already feel like you are treading water, just trying to do the best for your kids, and then you can’t put food on the table on top of everything else,’’ Stephanie said. “It’s like another kind of failure you feel. 💔

“I don’t even know where we would have been, what we would have done without Redkite. It felt like everything to us at that time. It’s nice to know that someone still sees you in the sea of madness.”
Redkite and the Leukaemia Foundation have both recently released reports into the financial impact of cancer on families.

Redkite released a research paper, the Hidden Financial Crisis: The Financial Toxicity of Childhood Cancer which found that families reported spending an estimated $33,000 in out-of-pocket expenses since their child’s diagnosis.

The Leukaemia Foundation released a national scorecard on regional patient subsidies which showed that 1 in 8 blood cancer patients are missing, delaying of cancelling treatment because they can’t afford it. To learn more, visit redkite.org.au and cutcancercost.org.au

This week is National Carers Week, a time to spotlight the millions of unpaid carers across Australia and recognise the important role they play in the lives of those they care for.

When a child is diagnosed with cancer, parents and family members often find themselves taking on significant caring responsibilities while navigating changes to work, finances, relationships and their own wellbeing.

Many may not think of themselves as “carers” – they’re simply doing what they need to do for their child and family. But their care matters, and this year’s theme, ‘Care for a carer’, reminds us that those supporting others deserve recognition and support too. ❤️

After 15 years in the red and white, our wonderful Redkite Ambassador Harry Cunningham is saying goodbye to the Sydney Swans.

For more than a decade, Harry has been an incredible supporter of Redkite – becoming the face of Redkite Day, making regular hospital ward visits, supporting our music therapy program and championing countless fundraising initiatives to support families facing childhood cancer.

Harry’s incredible contribution to the community has seen him named a finalist for the Jim Stynes Community Leadership Award three times, but it’s the kindness, generosity and genuine care he has shown Redkite families over the years that has meant the most.
