Refugee Week wouldn't be what it is without the tireless contributions of our Refugee Ambassadors. This year, they so generously shared their stories with thousands of people in communities all around Australia.

To our 40 (and counting!) Refugee Ambassadors who shared memories from their first countries, the food they love to cook, the lessons they've learnt from their diverse journeys, and so much more: thank you. Refugee Week - and Australia - is better with you as a part of it.

This World Refugee Day, we remember: Australia’s refugee program saves lives.

And even as we celebrate Australia's milestone of welcoming a million refugees since World War II, and the immeasurable contributions they and their descendants have made to the nation, the work continues.

We are deeply concerned about the growing gap between the number of refugees in need of protection and the number of resettlement places available worldwide.

Australia has, so far, not joined other key nations in cutting aid or resettlement. In the next year, the Albanese Government will decide on the future of Australia’s Refugee and Humanitarian Program which it increased to 20,000 places in 2023.

It is essential that this program be maintained or expanded, not cut. Because Australia’s refugee program saves lives.

"Australia’s one millionth refugee is not just a number — it is a testament to what this country is capable of when it chooses to welcome. At SSI, we have had the privilege of walking alongside the people behind these stories. What humbles us most is seeing the people we once supported become the ones now strengthening our communities. That cycle of belonging is one of Australia’s greatest achievements, and it must be protected." — Violet Roumeliotis, CEO, SSI

One in five SSI staff members arrived in Australia as refugees. Today, they are case managers, youth workers, and settlement professionals - using their own experience of being welcomed to welcome others. Among Australia's one million stories are SSI team members like Zaid, Maral, Tamara, Miwa and Abuoi. Their journeys from newcomer to nation-builder reflect the most powerful truth in Australia's humanitarian story: welcome doesn't end with arrival. It multiplies.
