This Remembrance Day, who will you remember?

Sarbi was an explosive detection dog with the Australian Army in Afghanistan in 2007 and 2008. During a firefight in 2008, Sarbi fled and was believed to be lost forever. Remarkably, Sarbi was found, thirteen months later, in the posession of a local Taliban commander and was reunited with Australia forces.

"Animals have been an incredibly important part of Australia's military history," RSL Victoria State President Dr. Mark Schröffel said. 'From the horses who served with Australia's bush soldiers in the Boer War, to dogs like Sarbi in Vietnam and Afghanistan, animals have forever been by the side of Australian service men and women."

Sarbi will be featured on one of RSL Victoria's Poppy Appeal badges, and represents a wider nod to all military and service animals who assist and work with our veterans everyday. October 11 marks 25 years since Australia's first involvement in the war in Afghanistan.

RSL Victoria would like to thank all of our service men and women who took part in operations in Afghanistan from 2001 to 2021.

On Sunday 11 October, 2026 a service will be conducted at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra to recognise the service and sacrifice of the tens of thousands of Australians who served in Afghanistan and the Middle East during the conflict.

The service will be broadcast live on ABC TV.

As with ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day we urge all Australians to pause and say thank you to the men and women who served on your behalf. We also encourage all veterans of the conflict to commemorate this moment with your fellow service members, family and friends and take pride in your service.

Our thoughts are with the families of those whose loved ones never returned and with those injured.

RSL Victoria is proud to present this year's Poppy Appeal.

The red poppy has long been a symbol of remembrance since the First World War, honouring the courage, service and sacrifice of veterans and their families.

When you buy a poppy this Poppy Appeal, you're doing more than remembering those who served. You're helping provide practical support, connection and care for veterans and their families facing challenges today.

Throughout October, we will be spotlighting our incredible volunteer community who will be selling poppies in their local community. At RSL Victoria, our volunteers are the heart of our organisation, and their tireless work ensures veterans and their families can receive the support they need. We are proud to shine a light on the faces that makes this happen.

Our first poppy seller, Ivan Araujo, is a Wellbeing Coordinator at RSL Victoria, and is at the forefront of providing practical assistance to veterans and their families.
