The Grassroots Collective is deeply disheartened by what occurred at Parliament House last night.

Many of us were in the public gallery to observe the cannabis legalisation debate. During the debate, some politicians suggested that any discussion of cannabis legalisation must not include the issue of racial inequality as it does not exist.

At the same time, four police officers entered the gallery, positioned themselves around the entrance and exit, and remained present throughout the proceedings. This created an intimidating and uncomfortable atmosphere for members of our group.

Three officers then sat beside three of our members from ethnically diverse backgrounds. Those members chose to leave because they no longer felt safe or comfortable remaining in the gallery. This is especially concerning given the well-documented disproportionate impact that drug policing and cannabis prohibition have on racialised communities.

The officers’ conduct in the gallery also appeared extremely disrespectful. They spoke loudly amongst themselves, yelled at a child, and repeatedly stared at members of our group in a way that felt intimidating. In the many parliamentary debates our members have attended, we have not previously seen a single police officer in the gallery. But why during our debate?

The irony was impossible to ignore. While opposing MPs debated whether cannabis legalisation should even include a conversation about race, people from minority backgrounds in the gallery felt forced to leave because of the police presence.

Every Victorian should be able to observe Parliament without feeling intimidated or singled out. Last night provided a clear example of how police presence can be used to intimidate rather than protect, highlighting why many in our community do not feel safe around police. Shame!

A couple of weeks ago, we shared that we were heading in a new direction.

Now, we’re excited to finally unveil our new logo. 🌿

A fresh look for the same mission: ending cannabis prohibition, challenging stigma, and building a stronger, more connected cannabis community.

Now for the next step. Getting these printed on h**p T-shirts. Who wants one? 👕🌱

Disappointing outcome tonight

To those who tuned in to the debate, we’re sorry.

Thoroughly disappointed by the level of contempt with which so many politicians seem to ignore the overwhelming will of the people.

Our proposal was very simple, we think it's time to trust Victorians with the question of legalising cannabis.

Instead, the major parties continue to try to shut us down.

This November, look for the leaf.

Plebiscite Support Gathering
12/8/2026 Wednesday, 3 PM at Parliament Steps

Wednesday the 12th August the Legalise Cannabis Party has called for a vote on a plebiscite in parliament. If this passes there will be a plebiscite, a plebiscite is a direct vote by all voters on an important question, our beings if we should legalise cannabis. It’s our chance to test public opinion when politicians can't or won’t act.

Show your support to for MP's Rachel Payne and David Ettershank as they debate the matter for our community.

We will meet outside of parliament at 3PM as we hear from our community speakers. We will then enter parliament once the debate commences. This will require a drivers licence/ proof or age card or any form of photo ID unfortunately you wont be allowed to enter parliament without this. Reminder to bring your legal w**d scripts too.

** Collective Update **

Welcome to the start of our rebrand 🌱
The seedlings have emerged from there seed coats 🌿

This collective has become the volunteer wing of the Legalsise Cannabis Party Victoria. With the goal to encourage other states to follow suit and create volunteer collectives country wide.

We are in the process of launching the Victorian Branch of the LCP - Grassroots Collective.

When we went to Nimbin we unfortunately had to leave "The Big Joint" in town. Since we have been back we have been quietly working in the background on a rebrand plus planning a heap of new tactics to engage with members of the public as we look to build our collective.

Over the next couple of weeks we are going to a number of universities for O week to find students that may be keen to join our collective as we aim to grow quite quickly over the next couple of months. Look out for us at O week. There is a gummie guessing game for students to play with a Grand Prize of a LCP merch Price plus a copy of Drenched in Wonder by Bill Simpson.

This year the attention is quickly shifting to the upcoming state election here in Victoria as we aim to support the re-election of Rachel Payne and any other candidate that runs for Legalise Cannabis Victoria.

If you would like to join the collective dm us on this page or email [email protected]. We meet in Brunswick or online via Google meets on Monday nights from 7-9pm.

Big news for our Sunshine Joint Walk 🌿

We’re excited to share that David Ettershank MP will be joining us on the day and walking with the community. Come down, say hi and have a yarn with the man himself!

Ettershank's voice has been amplifying cannabliss law reform for years. In 2024 he moved a motion for a legal defence for THC-positive drivers with prescriptions if unimpaired.

He also called out the government slamming broken reform promises that still trap prescribed patients without fair driving rights after the $5.2M Swinburne-led medical cannabliss driving trial has been delayed until AFTER the next state election. 🤔
