It's Wednesday, time to raise some dough! This week we are helping out the legends at SCCUD - Sunshine Coast Clean Up Divers, volunteers who dive our local waterways, cleaning up the trash.

SUNDAY 3rd of March FROM 1000 - 1330

Collaborative community initiative to clean up underwater

SIGN IN TIME: 10:15 am at the latest! We need time to check your certification, set up gear and give the briefing.

MEETING POINT: Rotunda, La Balsa.

CLEAN UP DIVE - of 75 minutes or less, will begin approx 11:00, high tide peaks at 12:34, dive will cease approx 12:15.

POST CLEAN UP: We will sort, record and arrange responsible disposal (or repurposing/reuse if we can!) of all debris. Then we'll enjoy a free drinks courtesy of The hidden sea w**e. All participants are expected to engage in sorting and recording of some sort.

Meet 10am, dive at 11.

A clean up dive to coincide with Clean Up Australia day. Max of 16 divers.

Suitable for all confident and competent divers of any level of certification, shallow site, very low visibility (3m or so), obvious risk from removing debris, and from marine life (stonefish), so emphasis on "confident and competent". No gear hire will be available.

Probably won't be any BBQ or drinks for this one. Sorry.

Big ups to everyone who has been tackling debris on their own, I hear that La Balsa remains relatively debris free because so many of you do your bit every dive 🥰 So proud to have started so many of you on your Dive Against Debris journey.

Our mission is to empower the dive community and activate a new wave of climate ambassadors who will inspire the public and key decision makers to take action at scale 🌊🌊

Can't appreciate our supporters enough 🥰

Our volunteers put in lots of time, effort, skill, and money to remove tonnes of underwater debris.

Our post clean up feed and drink is donated from several local and eco conscious businesses. We sincerely encourage you to support them in return.

Perhaps you wonder how we know how much fishing line we collect?

Excellent question!

We use the guidelines to gauge the amount of fishing line. Basically I look at how the size of our pile and how many rugby balls it's equal to.. because we don't have the time to sort out fishing line properly (we used to let it dry out, clean it, and sort it. 4 people would take 5 hours to sort to sort what we collected yesterday.. we ain't got time for that).

1 rugby ball size of tightly wound fishing line.. is 1km of line 👌hence we estimate 6.5km of line from yesterday's event (hard to gauge from the image, but several of us agreed on this amount, based on the guidelines).

96kg of debris, including roughly 6.5km of fishing line 🤯, was removed by divers from Noosa river today 🙌 about 1000 individual items of debris when all broken down.

2 boats with 7 divers (thanks to skippers: Andrew, of Noosa boating fishing alliance, and Julz, the all round legend), dived at Noosa Woods dog beach, and Munna point. Vis was wonderful for Noosa river, so I'm very pleased so many divers made the effort to attend.

Local youth conservationist ._j_j also ran a land clean up with about 10 landlubbers and they got several hundred pieces of rubbish 💪

Thank you to everyone who attended, and special thanks to my partner Lesley. None of this can happen without the efforts of everyone who attends and chips in.

And big extra special thanks to our supporters that reward what we do as this is not an easy task and requires a lot of experience/knowledge and gear to undertake safely and properly.
