Artimalia

Artimalia a kingdom of art 🦜

02/03/2025

Our first Artimalia feature is nearly here, and it’s a special one! We’re zooming in close to add the final details - can you tell what endangered species this is from just its eye?

The Zookeeper’s Sketchbook is our love letter to the natural world. We’re so grateful for the support we’ve received in the first year of ZKS, and now we’re moving forward into the next chapter… introducing Artimalia. 🐘

Artimalia = Art + Animalia.

Animalia is the taxonomic kingdom comprising of all living and extinct animals (including us). We believe it’s more vital than ever before to recognise our place in nature and our duty to protect it for future generations. 🪸

Our focus on conservation support and education is stronger than ever, and this next chapter will deepen this connection. Together our interests expand far and wide, and we’ll have some very exciting announcements soon.

Thank you for your support.
It means the world to us.

In honour of Sir David Attenborough’s 98th birthday, we are excited to launch our first portrait. 🌱

Sir David Attenborough is an inspiration to both of us, having fuelled our deep love of nature, wildlife, and conservation from an early age. We feel forever grateful to have lived in a time when we could witness his commitment to our wonderful world. šŸŒ

Happy Birthday Sir David Attenborough - thank you for making the earth a better, kinder, and more conscious place.

Why skulls? ā˜ ļø
You might have noticed that a few of our first collections include skulls - but why? Skulls provide intricate details of an animal’s anatomy, showcasing their unique adaptations and evolutionary traits. We love this for two reasons:

🌱 Conservation:
Understanding how animals have evolved to survive and thrive in their environments means we can better protect and preserve their habitats. This knowledge informs conservation efforts, allowing experts to create effective strategies for safeguarding vulnerable species and ecosystems.

šŸŒ Biodiversity:
Every species possesses its own set of adaptations that contribute to the diversity of life on Earth. Studying these adaptations helps us appreciate the richness of biodiversity and understand the interconnectedness of all living organisms within ecosystems.

Field Journal #002:
White-Bellied Sea Eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster)
šŸ“Point Cartwright, Sunshine Coast, Australia

We were so excited to see a white-bellied sea eagle on a recent visit to Point Cartwright. With a wingspan stretching up to 2 meters, keen eyesight, and sharp talons, these remarkable raptors play a vital role in maintaining the balance of their habitat’s ecosystems.

The scientific name of the translates almost perfectly to the animals common name - ā€˜Haliaeetus’ is derived from Greek roots, where ā€˜halia’ means ā€˜sea’ and ā€˜aetos’ means ā€˜eagle’. Then, ā€˜Leucogasterā€ comes from the Greek words ā€˜leukos’, meaning ā€˜white’, and ā€˜gaster’, meaning ā€˜belly’, referring to the bird’s distinctive white belly feathers!

Python skulls have some seriously impressive features, reflecting the snakes’ abilities to feed and survive in the wild. šŸ

ā˜ ļø These skulls feature kinetic joints that allow them to open their mouths incredibly wide, enabling them to swallow prey whole, often larger than their own heads.

🦷 Pythons have extra teeth on their upper jaws called pterygoid teeth, which help guide prey down their throats during swallowing.

🦓 Python skulls are highly flexible, allowing them to adjust their shape and size to accommodate large meals and minimize the risk of injury while feeding.

This week we’re spotlighting all things Woma Python in celebration of our newest collection!

Did you know? šŸ

Woma Pythons possess specialised heat-sensing pits on their faces, allowing them to detect prey even on the darkest of nights!

These snakes are skilled burrowers, creating underground hideaways to escape the scorching heat of the Australian desert.

Woma Pythons are also one of the few snake species with an immunity to venom, meaning they can dine on venomous snakes and exploit a wider range of food sources in the barren regions they call home.
