Hi local friends and growers,

A little idea of mine is finally sprouting and I’d love your help to get the word out.
I’m seeking expressions of interest for an Edible Open Gardens event throughout Hume.
Could you share with friends and take a minute to fill out this form to help with planning?

🌱What is it?
A ticketed event where local gardeners open their gates for their community to come and learn how they grow their own food. Big sunny blocks, small shady blocks, verges, front yards, backyards, rentals and balconies are all on show to demonstrate what growing your own food can look like across Hume and how to make it happen at your home.

🌱 What it isn’t
Big budget, perfectly manicured, strictly ornamental gardens.
People can see these on tv and online - they need real life achievable examples of what’s possible in their own neighbourhood and how to make the most of their space

🌱Why?
I want to connect growers of all ages, confidence levels, cultures and abilities, and empower our community to take some ideas with them and give them a go at home.

🌱When?
Possibly Autumn 2025 - perfectly timed to see our gardens in their late summer glory and provide plenty of time for our inspired visitors to plan and prep their pot or patch for the following spring.

Just FYI - the 2025 event may be just Sunbury based, a nice little trial for future Hume-wide events.

So if you think you’d like to be a part of this exciting event please pop your details in the attached form - I promise it’s quick and easy!

Please also feel free to share with friends who might be interested.

Thanks all✌️🌱

Don’t forget that you can start growing food at home for free with each of the Hume Libraries hosting seed libraries! We’ll be visiting each spot over the coming weeks so you can see exactly where to find it and what’s available now.

Today we’re at the Hume Global Learning Centre - Broadmeadows, just ask at the counter and library staff will present this tidy case of in-season seeds to choose from - currently on offer is spinach, onions, silverbeet, kale, rocket and flowers for bees.

What are you planting in your patch this week?

Seed saving season! What heirloom plants are you eating/harvesting that you can save seeds from? Every time I eat something delicious (a good tomato, cucumber, lettuce, nasturtium, squash etc.) or if I want to spread plants across my landscape (like butterflyweed, milkweed, elderberry, angelica, Jack-in-the-pulpit etc.) I simply save or direct sow the seeds I harvest. Every time we save seeds from our most successful heirloom plants, we are improving vigor and adapting them to become the best plants for our own back yards...and we are helping to preserve them for the future!
