🚒 Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb 👨‍🚒

Georgia has been a dedicated CFA volunteer firefighter for eight years and has proudly served with the Sunbury Fire Brigade for over a year. In that time, she has seen firsthand the challenges faced by first responders and the very real impact traumatic incidents can have on mental health and wellbeing.

She’s also supported close friends and colleagues through the emotional toll of the job—many of whom have relied on vital mental health services and support networks to recover and continue their journey in emergency services.

This year marks Georgia’s fifth Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb! Having previously completed the challenge virtually three times and once in person, she knows just how tough it is—and she’s ready to take it on again 💪

“I’m taking part to raise awareness and funds for an incredibly important cause. Each year, so many first responders face mental health challenges because of the work they do.

The services supported by the Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb provide critical support to those who need it most. By backing this event, we help make sure those services are there when they’re needed—maybe even for myself one day.

I’m also doing this as a personal challenge. I want to keep pushing myself physically and mentally and prove that we’re capable of more than we often believe.”

If you see Georgia around town, give her some encouragement—or consider supporting this incredible cause! Together, we can help protect the mental health of those who protect us every day. ❤️

Most kitchen fires are caused by unattended cooking, and not being safe around heat sources in the kitchen 👩‍🍳👨‍🍳
Don’t risk your family’s safety, keep looking, while cooking 🥘🔥

🚒 Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb 👨‍🚒

First off the rank is Andrea - and this also happens to be her first Stair Climb!

Andrea has been with Sunbury Fire Brigade for 2.5 years. She is very passionate in her plight to help those around her, so her motivation to join the MFSC is very simple: to help raise funds for our amazing Emergency Services Support Team, and to provide awareness of the diverse experiences that emergency workers face daily. Police, paramedics, firefighters, nurses, doctors, and 000 call takers are all there on your worst day, doing everything they possibly can to prevent further tragedy and save lives - sometimes to the detriment of their own health and mental wellbeing.

Andrea isn’t the only emergency services worker in her family - her sister is an Advanced Care Paramedic of 17 years with the Queensland Ambulance Service! 🚑 They are very fortunate to have each other to lean on for support, but others may not have that support network readily available. That is why services like Lifeline and the 000 Foundation are so crucial to have and maintain.

Being able to do the stair climb means a great deal to Andrea - not just to accomplish an awesome feat, but because the beneficiaries of the funds raised are close to her heart. Having lost many family members and close friends to cancer, the Peter Mac Cancer Foundation continues to play a huge role in cancer research and treatment development.

Andrea has already committed hard to her training by using the stair climber at the gym, focusing on her eating habits, and tackling the 1000 Steps whenever she can!

🍳 Kitchen fire safety tips
The kitchen is the room where most home fires start.
Staying alert is your best defence — keep looking while you’re cooking to prevent a small distraction from turning into a dangerous fire.

• Check that all heat sources are turned off
Before leaving home or going to sleep, make sure the stove, cooktop, oven and any other heat‑producing appliances are switched off.

• Never use water on an oil or grease fire
Water can cause burning oil to splatter and spread the fire. Use a fire blanket or appropriate extinguisher instead.

• Always supervise children in the kitchen
Keep kids at a safe distance from hot surfaces, appliances and cooking activities.

• Equip your kitchen with a fire extinguisher and fire blanket
Every kitchen should have both. Take the time to learn how to use them safely and confidently.

⚡ Electrical & charging safety tips ⚡

Electrical fires are one of the most common types of fires in the home, and they can start quickly when appliances, wiring or devices fail.

Here are some tips to stay safe from electrical fires:
🔌Keep power leads tidy and avoid overloading power boards

🔌 Only use approved charging devices
Use chargers and cables that meet Australian safety standards. Cheap or unapproved devices can overheat or fail.

🔌 Charge devices on non‑combustible surfaces
Place phones, tablets, and other rechargeable items on hard, non‑flammable surfaces like a bench or table.
Unplug them as soon as they’re fully charged.

🔌 Clean the lint filter in your dryer before every use
Lint buildup is a major fire hazard. Empty the filter and check around the dryer for dust or debris every time you use it.

🔌 Use timers to help prevent overcharging
Timers or smart plugs can help ensure devices aren’t left charging for long periods, reducing the risk of overheating.

🚒 Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb 👨‍🚒

On Saturday 12 September 2026, firefighters and emergency services personnel from across Australia — and around the world — will descend on Melbourne to take on the gruelling 28-floor climb at Crown Metropol, raising vital funds for cancer research and crisis support.

Six of our members will tackle the climb in up to 25 kg of turnout gear and breathing apparatus, symbolising the significant physical and mental burdens faced daily by our first responders and their families. Some will even complete the climb “on air” using a self-contained breathing apparatus, adding an extra level of difficulty to an already demanding challenge.

This incredible event raises funds for:
- Lifeline
- Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre
- 000 Foundation

These organisations play a crucial role in supporting those affected by cancer, mental health challenges, and su***de.

We’re extremely proud that six members from Sunbury Fire Brigade will be taking part in this event. Over the coming weeks, we’ll introduce each of our climbers — stay tuned to learn more about their stories and motivations.

Every donation makes a real difference. By supporting this cause, you’re helping these vital charities and standing behind our crew as they take on this inspiring challenge. 💪🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️👨‍🚒

Last night our members stepped up for some isolated structure firefighting training 🚒🔥🏠

We ran a scenario with a primary appliance responding first, followed shortly after by a second tanker to supply water and additional resources. Timing, coordination, and communication were key — and our crew leaders really put in the work to keep everything running smoothly.

The conditions? Less than ideal. 🌧️ Dark, wet, and a bit chilly — but that’s the reality of the job. We don’t get to choose the environment we’re called into, so our training reflects exactly that.

Proud of the effort and resilience shown by everyone involved.
