The Kimberley Song Muster is underway in Fitzroy Crossing, building on our long-running Sound FX program. This residency brings together local songwriters, musicians, educators and community to create and share songs in First Languages, whilst exploring new pathways for collaboration across the region.

In this video captured by Wangki Yupurnanupurru Radio at Fitzroy Valley District High School's Skutta Bloke’s Day, June Nixon sings ‘Kapiwarnti Palu Nguniny Martuwarrarla,’ joined by Faith Atwell, Billie Burrows, Gillian Howell, and Meg Lowe.

Written in Walmajarri, June wrote the song to teach kids about the fish living in the Martuwarra - Fitzroy River - in their language.

If you’re in Broome today, catch Bart Marr & the Now or Never Boys live as part of Shinju Matsuri’s Mabu Nurlu Buru (Good Song Country).

Bart and the band will join Saltwater Kin and Stellar Moon & the Dark Knights for a free evening of original Kimberley music at the Shinju Hub, including the celebration of Bart & the Now or Never Boys’ debut single release.

Bart is one of the artists joining us for Wanim this September, alongside Stephen Pigram, Mary Rapp, Carl Dewhurst and Talya Valenti.

We’re looking forward to sharing more of Bart’s music as Wanim travels through the Kimberley from 11-21 September.

Meet the Wanim ensemble - a new collaboration travelling across the Kimberley next month with Stephen Pigram (guitar, ukulele, vocals), Bart Marr (guitar, vocals), Mary Rapp (cello), Carl Dewhurst (guitar) and Talya Valenti (percussion).

Bringing together artists from different cultures, generations and musical traditions, Wanim moves through song, storytelling, improvisation and contemporary sound, evolving from place to place through the people, Country and communities encountered along the way.

Yinkarni-La Jijikajaku, "Let's sing with the kids", was created through a partnership with Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa, working with Martu women, Elders and young people from the communities of Jigalong and Punmu to create and record children’s songs in Martu language.

Led by Elders and families, and supported by linguists, the project prioritised strong and accurate use of language. The songs are now being shared in homes, schools and community settings, helping children learn Martu language through music, storytelling and everyday experiences.

Created by Martu, for Martu children and families, the songs reflect Country, animals, hunting, school and everyday life.

Our friends at Tone List are celebrating 10 years tonight.

Tone List emerged during a period of growth in WA's experimental music scene, building on momentum generated by initiatives including Tura's iMprov program. Over the past decade, it has championed new and experimental music, supported artists and built a community around exploratory music.

We're pleased to share that Tura and Marninwarntikura Women's Resource Centre (MWRC) have been named finalists in the 2026 Art Music Awards for Buga Yanu Junba.

The nomination recognises this community-led language revitalisation project, developed through our long-running Kimberley program, Sound FX, in partnership with Fitzroy Valley educators from Baya Gawiy Buga yani Jandu yani u, the early childhood and family centre of MWRC.

This project has only been possible through the shared leadership of MWRC's Emily Carter and composer and researcher Dr Gillian Howell (Tura/The University of Melbourne), together with the generosity, creativity and dedication of the Fitzroy Valley community who have shared their knowledge, stories and languages.
