The latest The NT News fishing column highlighted exactly why the Top End continues to produce some of Australia's most exciting barramundi action. The 2026 Top End Barra Series (TEBS) Round 3 on the Adelaide River delivered incredible fishing, memorable stories and quality fish, with competitors finding barra right throughout the system and some outstanding catches recorded.

Congratulations to John Kiers on taking out the Old School category of the round, while Kalan Matthews landed the biggest fish of the round with an impressive 120cm barramundi and also won the Open category. Young angler Michael Bates also impressed with a magnificent 99cm barra, proving the future of Top End fishing is in good hands.

At the same time, the Barra Nationals produced record-breaking results, with an incredible 2,237 barramundi caught across the competition, a remarkable achievement and a testament to the quality of fishing currently on offer in the Northern Territory.

๐Ÿ† Barra Nationals Highlights
๐ŸŸ Record fish tally: 2,237 barramundi
๐ŸŸ Biggest fish: 115cm barra caught by Dylan O'Donnell from Team No Mundies
๐ŸŸ Champion Angler: Tristan Christie from Team Chasin Tides, 92 fish, 6109cm
๐Ÿ† Champion Team: Team Metery Maniacs โ€“ Sean Stringer, Sam Chambers and Will Simpson

A huge congratulations to all competitors, volunteers, organisers, sponsors and supporters who helped make both events such outstanding successes, especially given the challenging circumstances at the Daly River post flood devastation. From family-friendly moments and junior anglers landing trophy fish, to record catches and the efforts of some of the country's most elite competitive barramundi anglers, these events continue to showcase the depth of fishing talent in the Northern Territory and reinforce why the NT is widely regarded as the barramundi fishing capital of Australia.

In just a few weeks, attention turns to one of the Territory's most iconic fishing events, the NT Barra Classic . The next generation of anglers will take centre stage at the Junior Barra Classic on 6 July, before the Barra Classic Masters, an event for anglers aged 60 years and over, runs from 7โ€“9 July. The spotlight then shifts to the main Barra Classic event from 7โ€“13 July, bringing together anglers from across the Territory and beyond for a week of competition, camaraderie and world-class barramundi fishing. With the fishing firing and momentum building across the Top End, all signs point to another outstanding celebration of Territory barra fishing.

"Where's the pontoon?" - many of you have been getting in touch and are wondering what has happened to East Arm boat ramp pontoon... Watch on to hear about some of the longer term solutions in the mix.

Do you use the East Arm boat ramp?

Come for a drive with us along Wooliana Road to the Daly River public boat ramp as it opens for the first time since the 2026 devastating floods.

On behalf of the fishing community AFANT would like to extend our thanks to the NT Logistics and Infrastructure for the huge effort they have undertaken to repair and re-open this important infrastructure.

Road works and traffic management are still in place in sections so please be cautious and drive to the conditions.

The boat ramp car parking has been reduced in capacity and is expected to have fencing erected to protect damaged areas.

Fishing the Daly River is made possible thanks to an agreement between Traditional Owners and the Northern Territory Government. The official Fishing the Daly River Guide states:

Last night at the Darwin Game Fishing Club monthly catch up, Minister for Infrastructure Bill Yan MLA - Member for Namatjira updated members present (including the AFANT team) that the public boat ramp at Wooliana is expected to open today from midday.

This is great news, not only for the Barra Nationals but also for everyone making plans for upcoming long weekend.

Please note that the region is still in the middle of recovery from very significant flood damage. This means that accommodation and services are limited compared to normal. It is also important to recognise that as we celebrate access to the river returning, this is tempered by the fact that many local people have still not been able to return home.

Please take care on the river, as much has changed after the floods, with shallow sandbars and snags in new places. We encourage all visitors to be as safe as possible and to slow down as you learn about the new river conditions.

NT Logistics and Infrastructure has advised AFANT that around 80% of the Nightcliff boat ramp car park will be closed from 7:30am to 1:00pm on Monday 1 June.

The temporary closure is associated with expedited Nightcliff Jetty works, which are being undertaken to ensure the jetty can reopen for the final two weeks of the June/July school holidays.

The good news is that the car park is due to reopen by 1:00pm, which should coincide with a tide level of around 3m and rising โ€” in time for the ideal tidal window for this ramp.

We thank the Department for its ongoing communication with AFANT, which helps us get timely information out to the fishing community.

In related news, a number of fishers have contacted AFANT about ongoing difficulties accessing boat trailer parking at Nightcliff, particularly when dedicated trailer parks are being taken up by vehicles without trailers.

This has become an increasing issue in recent years as the area has grown in popularity, and it is affecting ease of access to the boat ramp. Ramp users have reported having to leave and use a different ramp or having to park a long walk away in the backstreets.

This week, our CEO had the opportunity to raise these concerns with the City of Darwin Council. We were pleased with the constructive conversation and Council staffโ€™s awareness of the issue.

Weโ€™ll keep members updated as this progresses.

25/05/2026

AFANT can confirm the NT Government has proceeded with changes increasing the recreational tarpon possession limit from 5 fish to 30 fish per person.

The regulation changes were formally tabled in the NT Legislative Assembly on 12 May.

AFANT was given just 3 days to respond to the proposal. Despite this compressed timeframe, we rapidly consulted with fishing clubs and stakeholders and submitted a detailed compromise proposal that supported the practical intent of the change, while recommending additional safeguards including:

- A lower increase to 15 fish per person
- A vessel limit to prevent excessive harvest
- Upper size limits on tarpon retained for bait
- A 3-year trial and review period

While we acknowledged that the previous limit may have been unnecessarily restrictive for some bait-use scenarios, concerns were also raised about:

โ€ข The scale of the increase
โ€ข The absence of a vessel limit
โ€ข Limited supporting biological or stock information provided
โ€ข And the precedent set by such a compressed consultation process

Freshwater Tarpon are not small baitfish; they are juvenile pelagic fish that grow to large sizes (100cm+) and are also valued by many Territory fishers as a sportfish.

Ultimately, NT Fisheries advised AFANT that the amendments would proceed unchanged.

AFANT remains committed to practical accessible fishing experiences, sustainable fisheries management and strong consultation processes for the recreational fishing sector.
